Saudi government allegedly funded a ‘dry run’ for 9/11

Saudi government allegedly funded a ‘dry run’ for 9/11

By Paul Sperry, NY Post, September 9, 2017:

Fresh evidence submitted in a major 9/11 lawsuit moving forward against the Saudi Arabian government reveals its embassy in Washington may have funded a “dry run” for the hijackings carried out by two Saudi employees, further reinforcing the claim employees and agents of the kingdom directed and aided the 9/11 hijackers and plotters.

Two years before the airliner attacks, the Saudi Embassy paid for two Saudi nationals, living undercover in the US as students, to fly from Phoenix to Washington “in a dry run for the 9/11 attacks,” alleges the amended complaint filed on behalf of the families of some 1,400 victims who died in the terrorist attacks 16 years ago.

The court filing provides new details that paint “a pattern of both financial and operational support” for the 9/11 conspiracy from official Saudi sources, lawyers for the plaintiffs say. In fact, the Saudi government may have been involved in underwriting the attacks from the earliest stages — including testing cockpit security.

“We’ve long asserted that there were longstanding and close relationships between al Qaeda and the religious components of the Saudi government,” said Sean Carter, the lead attorney for the 9/11 plaintiffs. “This is further evidence of that.”

Lawyers representing Saudi Arabia last month filed a motion to dismiss the lawsuit, which may finally be headed toward trial now that Congress has cleared diplomatic-immunity hurdles. A Manhattan federal judge has asked the 9/11 plaintiffs, represented by lead law firm Cozen O’Connor, to respond to the motion by November.

Citing FBI documents, the complaint alleges that the Saudi students — Mohammed al-Qudhaeein and Hamdan al-Shalawi — were in fact members of “the Kingdom’s network of agents in the US,” and participated in the terrorist conspiracy.

They had trained at al Qaeda camps in Afghanistan at the same time some of the hijackers were there. And while living in Arizona, they had regular contacts with a Saudi hijacker pilot and a senior al Qaeda leader from Saudi now incarcerated at Gitmo. At least one tried to re-enter the US a month before the attacks as a possible muscle hijacker but was denied admission because he appeared on a terrorist watch list.

Qudhaeein and Shalawi both worked for and received money from the Saudi government, with Qudhaeein employed at the Ministry of Islamic Affairs. Shalawi was also “a longtime employee of the Saudi government.” The pair were in “frequent contact” with Saudi officials while in the US, according to the filings.

During a November 1999 America West flight to Washington, Qudhaeein and Shalawi are reported to have tried multiple times to gain access to the cockpit of the plane in an attempt to test flight-deck security in advance of the hijackings.

‘The dry run reveals more of the fingerprints of the Saudi government.’

– Kristen Breitweiser
“After they boarded the plane in Phoenix, they began asking the flight attendants technical questions about the flight that the flight attendants found suspicious,” according to a summary of the FBI case files.

“When the plane was in flight, al-Qudhaeein asked where the bathroom was; one of the flight attendants pointed him to the back of the plane,” it added. “Nevertheless, al-Qudhaeein went to the front of the plane and attempted on two occasions to enter the cockpit.”

The pilots were so spooked by the Saudi passengers and their aggressive behavior that they made an emergency landing in Ohio. On the ground there, police handcuffed them and took them into custody. Though the FBI later questioned them, it decided not to pursue prosecution.

But after the FBI discovered that a suspect in a counterterrorism investigation in Phoenix was driving Shalawi’s car, the bureau opened a counterterrorism case on Shalawi. Then, in November 2000, the FBI received reporting that Shalawi trained at terrorist camps in Afghanistan and had received explosives training to perform attacks on American targets. The bureau also suspected Qudhaeein was a Saudi intelligence agent, based on his frequent contact with Saudi officials.

More, investigators learned that the two Saudis traveled to Washington to attend a symposium hosted by the Saudi Embassy in collaboration with the Institute for Islamic and Arabic Sciences in America, which was chaired by the Saudi ambassador. Before being shut down for terrorist ties, IIASA employed the late al Qaeda cleric Anwar al-Awlaki as a lecturer. Awlaki ministered to some of the hijackers and helped them obtain housing and IDs.

The FBI also confirmed that Qudhaeein’s and Shalawi’s airline tickets for the pre-9/11 dry run were paid for by the Saudi Embassy.

“The dry run reveals more of the fingerprints of the Saudi government,” said Kristen Breitweiser, one of the New York plaintiffs, whose husband perished at the World Trade Center.

“These guys were Saudi government employees for years and were paid by the Saudi government,” she added. “In fact, the Saudi Embassy paid for their plane tickets for the dry run.”

After the Nov. 19, 1999, incident — which took place less than two months before the first hijackers entered the US — both Saudi men held posts as Saudi government employees at the Imam Muhammad Ibn Saudi Islamic University, the parent of IIASA — “a further indication of their longstanding ties to the Saudi government,” the 9/11 complaint states.

Carter said in an interview that the allegations that the Saudi Embassy sponsored a pre-9/11 dry run — along with charges of other Saudi involvement in the 9/11 plot, from California to Florida — are based on “nearly 5,000 pages of evidence submitted of record and incorporated by reference into the complaint.”

They include “every FBI report that we have been able to obtain,” though hundreds of thousands of pages of government documents related to Saudi terror funding remain secret.

Attempts to reach lawyers representing the Saudi government by phone and email were unsuccessful. However, in last month’s motion to dismiss the lawsuit, they argued that the plaintiffs cannot prove the kingdom or its employees directly supported the hijackers.

we’ll see, but the US govt was in on it to. all those buildings were clearly imploded in a controlled demolition using explosives, which took many months to install, that can melt steel as seen by the rivers of molten steel in many photos and videos. building and fuel fires can’t get hot enough to turn structural steel into a flowing liquid. in particular, the sudden falling of the 50-story tower 7, which had little damage, is the key to this vast conspiracy. our (and other) intelligence agencies and military aren’t stupid, and they know what happened, as does everyone above some level in DC. any reporter with a brain has a pulitzer prize waiting for them if they will just follow the evidence, but no american court will ever allow any evidence to see the light of day

You don’t know Washington if you think large numbers of people can keep any kind of secret secret. The idea is ABSURD. Three people can keep a secret if two of them are dead.

That is why I pray that Trump can TRULY drain the SWAMP that is DC !!

        • Dorrie

Trump is showing that he’s PART of the swamp, by his going all in with Pelosi and Schumer! It was the single WORST financial agreement he possibly could have done!

    • IzlamIsTyranny

Yeah those two 757’s travelling at over 400 MPH and loaded with jet fuel had nothing to do with it.

      • Rocinante44

what did they have to do with it? good question, and i don’t think unbiased engineering can demonstrate that the impact damage and heat from a jet fuel fire should have resulted in the perfect vertical collapse of these buildings. i think they were designed to draw the world’s attention to the two towers for hours before someone punched the buttons to set up the shaped charges that had been rigged throughout the buildings so that the whole world would watch the towers fall. pretty ingenious. why did the undamaged nearby 50-story tower 7 just suddenly and neatly implode later in the day?

        • gungadin

Supposedly, the nearby tower –WTC 7 — had suffered massive damages from falling debris from the other two towers — if u believe that publicized story, I’ve got a couple of bridges to sell you……Nope, building 7 just like the WTC buildings themselves –I believe –(there’s even footage of firefighters on UTube taken at the WTC speaking of explosions in the Towers)– were controlled demolitions and that’s why they all collapsed in the same manner…..BTW whatever happened to that lawsuit that several hundred engineers had filed against the findings of the govt’s published “report”………Sorta reminds me of the same BS that the Warren Commission came to about the JFK asasination.

A circle jerk of troofers — and I had thought your kind had died off years ago.

        • IzlamIsTyranny

You do realize a 757’s empty operating weight is 129130 – 130730 lbs.? The take-off weight is more because a 757’s carries tens of thousands of gallons of jet fuel.
By comparison a school bus weighs 22,000 lbs. to 28,000 lbs.
Imagine a school bus going 500 MPH hitting an office building. Now imagine 4 or 5 such school buses hitting that same office building at 500 MPH.

          • Rocinante44

yeah, and the structure survived this impact just fine, just like the empire state building did when a US bomber lost in a fog crashed into it in the 1930’s. the impact had nothing to do with the collapse, the neatest textbook example of controlled demolition you will ever see. people have no idea how hard it is to bring a building down this neatly; it typically would become unstable and the upper half would lean over and fall just a chopped-down tree

          • IzlamIsTyranny

            “Just fine” LOL.

Ever heard of the formula F = ma? How about KE = mv^2?

      • Mark Steiner

The impacts shredded asbestos insulation from structural members, as burning hot jet fuel heated and weakened the girders, causing failure and ultimately collapse.

      • gungadin

“History is once again witnessing a great clash. This is not a clash of civilizations. The civilization of Islam, with its humane traditions of learning and tolerance, has no place for this violent sect of killers and aspiring tyrants. This is not a clash of religions. The faith of Islam teaches moral responsibility that ennobles men and women, and forbids the shedding of innocent blood. Instead, this is a clash of political visions.”

    Despite ‘28 pages’ release, Saudi’s 9/11 involvement
    still buried
    By Paul Sperry September 10, 2016 | 3:51pm

The White House thinks releasing the “28 pages” summarizing Saudi involvement in 9/11 satisfied the public’s need to know. But don’t be fooled. The full story remains buried under more than 100,000 pages of other, still-secret documents.

The public didn’t even get to see everything that was in those long-classified 28 (actually 29) pages from the congressional inquiry, which narrowly focus on Saudi government officials’ contacts with just two of the 15 Saudi hijackers during their stay in San Diego. The Obama administration blacked-out critical information throughout the document.

In all, there are nearly 100 separate redactions, ranging from single words, such as names of Saudi suspects, to paragraphs and entire sections of text. Obama’s censors offered no reason why any of that information had to be kept secret 15 years after the attacks, even though such explanations are required as part of declassification reviews.

The 29 pages reveal numerous, reinforcing connections between Saudi officials and the 9/11 hijackers. As convincing as they are in tying them together as co-conspirators, they’re merely a summary of the FBI and CIA case files that detail the supporting evidence, including Saudi phone and financial records and statements from material witnesses and informants. The FBI files on alleged Saudi intelligence agent and hijacker handler Omar al-Bayoumi alone are said to run more than 4,000 pages. They are said to include interviews with Saudi government officials who had contact with Bayoumi.

Lawyers for 9/11 families suing the Saudi kingdom, who Friday won congressional passage of a bill removing Saudi’s sovereign immunity, want to get their hands on those documents, along with:

More than 80,000 pages of unreleased documents related to the FBI’s investigation of a wealthy, well-connected Saudi family in Sarasota, Fla., who had “many connections” to “individuals associated with the terrorist attacks on 9/11/2001,” according to a 2002 FBI report.

Still-classified FBI case files from the investigations of hijackers based in Virginia and New Jersey, as well as Arizona and Oklahoma.

Still-secret material from the 9/11 Commission, including investigators’ 2003 interview with Saudi Prince Bandar, the transcript of which remains under lock and key at the National Archives. (The interview could shed light on why, according to the 29 pages, Bandar personally wrote checks to one of the hijackers’ alleged handlers and why a top al Qaeda operative captured in Pakistan possessed an unlisted phone number tied to Bandar’s Aspen mansion, as well as the phone number for one of Bandar’s bodyguards at the Saudi embassy in Washington.)

An entire section on the Saudi’s role in 9/11 that was blanked-out from the 2015 report of the 9/11 Review Commission, set up to assess the FBI’s and CIA’s performance in implementing the original commission’s recommendations and to evaluate new evidence.

The 2005 “joint FBI-CIA intelligence report assessing the nature and extent of Saudi government support of terrorism,” which remains classified.

Some 632 pages withheld by the Treasury Department explaining why a Saudi charity tied to al Qaeda was formally designated a foreign terrorist organization.

Documents and other materials recovered from the raid of Osama bin Laden’s Abbottabad,Pakistan compound in 2011 that still remain sealed.

Redacted pages from a 2002 CIA report titled “Saudi-Based Financial Support for Terrorist Organizations.”

Federal documents related to the investigations of as many as 70 Saudi nationals with Saudi diplomatic credentials who were kicked out of the country and sent back to their country after 9/11, most of whom worked in the Islamic Affairs offices of the Saudi Embassy in DC.

FBI reports and State Department memos detailing the decision to deny re-entry into the US in 2003 of Fahad al-Thumairy, a Saudi cleric who worked at the Saudi consulate in LA and is said to have acted as the advance man for two of the Saudi hijackers and, in fact, may have been at the center of the US support network for them.

The White House and Riyadh hoped the public would move on after the partial release of the 29 pages.

“Now that the declassification is complete,” said Saudi Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir, “we hope to continue our close cooperation with the US.” Not so fast. With so much still hidden from public view, the release of the 29 pages should be just the start of 9/11 transparency, not the end of it.

Two dozen members of Osama bin Laden’s family were urgently evacuated from the United States in the first days following the terrorist attacks on New York and Washington, according to the Saudi ambassador to Washington.

One of bin Laden’s brothers frantically called the Saudi Arabian Embassy in Washington looking for protection, Prince Bandar bin Sultan told The New York Times. The brother was sent to a room in the Watergate Hotel and was told not to open the door.

Most of bin Laden’s relatives were attending high school and college. The young members of the bin Laden family were driven or flown under FBI supervision to a secret place in Texas and then to Washington, The Times reported Sunday.

Many were terrified, fearing they would be lynched after hearing reports of violence against Muslims and Arab-Americans.

They left the country on a private charter plane when airports reopened three days after the attacks.

King Fahd, the ailing Saudi ruler, sent an urgent message to his embassy in Washington pointing out that there were “bin Laden children all over America” and ordered, “Take measures to protect the innocents,” the ambassador said.

It’s a tragedy,” Prince Bandar told the Times. “The elders” of the students “came to see me, and one of them was a bright boy from Harvard who like the others had absolutely nothing to do with this and yet we had to tell him to go home and wait until the emotions calmed down. And he told me that he never really appreciated why the Japanese wanted a memorial or an apology for their treatment in World War II.

The student added, according to the prince, “I understand now that when you are innocent, in the face of emotion, nothing, not even common sense, can help argue your case.”

Osama bin Laden is one of more than 50 children of a Yemeni-born migrant who made a vast fortune building roads and palaces in Saudi Arabia and his extended family spans the globe. Many have been educated in the United States and the family has donated millions of dollars to several American universities.

Bin Laden is estranged from his family and from Saudi Arabia, which revoked his citizenship in the early 1990s after he was caught smuggling weapons from Yemen.

    Here’s another one.
    let them go UNQUESTIONED!

Why were Saudi royals with ‘links to 9/11’ allowed to leave the U.S. without being quizzed by the FBI?

    By Daily Mail Reporter

    PUBLISHED: 18:31 EDT, 14 March 2012 | UPDATED: 03:33 EDT, 15 March 2012

Startling new information shows the FBI never questioned members of the Saudi Royal Family before allowing them to flee the United States in the days immediately following the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

Aboard the plane were two princes — one of whom allegedly had been in contact with al-Qaeda before the the attacks and another whose father’s longtime adviser owned a house in Florida that was allegedly visited several times by some of the hijackers.

What’s more, the FBI’s detailed report to Congress and President George W. Bush on the Saudi exodus was so flawed, it didn’t even correctly identify one of the princes, according to new reporting by MSNBC.

    Prince Ahmed Salman

Early warning: Prince Ahmed bein Salman (right, with the Clintons after winning the Belmont Stakes) has been accused of receiving contact from al-Quaeda

    Saudi Prince Sultan Bin Fahd

Stuck in Florida: Saudi Prince Sultan Bin Fahd (left) has ties to his father’s close adviser, who owned a house visited by September 11 hijackers

On the day of the terrorist attacks on New York and Washington, there were two members of the Saudi Royal family on American soil.

One, Prince Ahmed bin Salman, a media baron with vast wealth and a passion for racing expensive horses, was in Lexington Kentucky for the annual sale of thoroughbred yearlings.

The second, Prince Sultan bin Fahd, was a 22-year-old royal living in Sarasota, Florida, and studying at the University of Tampa’s American Language Academy.

Both men, MSNBC reports, were later found to have troubling connections to the men who hijacked four planes on September 11, 2001.

Al-Qaida had allegedly been in contact with Prince Ahmed before the attacks, according to statements made by one of Osama bin Ladin’s top aides, Abu Zubaydah, MSNBC reported.

University of Tampa American Language Academy

Secret flight: Prince Sultan was studying at the University of Tampa American Language Academy in Florida and took a private plane to Lexington, Kentucky

The Prince’s family has strenuously denied these allegations and said he loved the United States.

Additionally, an FBI supervisor reported that Prince Ahmed told a local TV station in the days after the attacks that he was bin Laden’s cousin.

However, no video of such an interview has ever surfaced and there is no evidence Prince Ahmed had family ties to bin Laden.

More strange is the fact that Prince Ahmed died in July 2002 at age 43 of heart failure. The circumstances of his death remain unclear to this day.

Prince Sultan, meanwhile, had links to Esam Ghazzawi — a top adviser to his father Prince Fahd.

Ghazzawi allegedly owned a home in Sarasota that was visited several times by Mohamad Atta, the leader of the September 11 hijackers, and his group.

On the day of the attacks, Prince Sultan was in Sarasota. He received a call from his uncle who told him to make it to Lexington as soon as they could so they could leave the country amid mounting anti-Saudi sentiment.

A former Florida police officer and a former FBI agent were hired to provide protection for the young royal and his colleagues.

In the hours after the September 11 attacks, the Federal Aviation Administration grounded all flights until 11am September 13.

Though it has been reported that the Saudis flew during this air prohibition, according to MSNBC, Prince Sultan and his friends actually didn’t leave on a chartered jet until five hours after the flight ban was lifted.

The FBI report to Congress and President George W. Bush lists another method of travel entirely. The FBI claimed that the prince hired a car and drove the 900 miles north to Kentucky.

But the two men who worked for the prince’s security detail said the FBI got this all wrong, MSNBC says.

Another key detail the FBI got wrong was Prince Sultan’s identity.

The FBI said the young prince was the son of Prince Ahmed. However, Prince Sultant is actually the older royal’s nephew.

Three days after prince touched down in Lexington, Kentucky, he and Prince Ahmed, along with 12 other Saudis boarded a Boeing 727 and flew back to Saudi Arabia.

None of the men was ever questioned by the FBI before they were allowed to leave the country, according to MSNBC.
