NYC: Muslim Public High School Principal Keeps Catholic Students Off Admissions List

Maspeth High School Principal Khurshid Abdul-Mutakabbir keeps changing his story of why he excluded 500 Catholic-school kids from getting into his school.

“Abdul-Mutakabbir told civic leaders in a prior phone call that parochial applicants pose a “problem,” Juniper Hill president Bob Holden told The Post.”

Today, he says it was “a clerical problem.”

It is not completely clear what is going on here, except that once again a Muslim is victimizing the kuffar. The parents are furious, and good for them — they should be.

“High-school principal accused of keeping Catholic-school kids off admission list,” ny Aaron Short and Susan Edelman, New York Post, March 26, 2017:

A Queens public high-school principal excluded 500 Catholic-school kids from a list of 4,000 students applying to get into his school, raising cries from furious parents of foul play.

“It was almost like they knew who would be accepted,” said Middle Village resident Jimmy Guarneri, 47, of the lottery system that was supposed to fairly choose students to get into popular Maspeth High School. “We’re very angry.”

After being rejected by Maspeth, Guarneri’s son was accepted at a Catholic high school, but got only a partial scholarship.

“I’m working two jobs as it is,” Guarneri said. “His first choice was to go to Maspeth.”

More than 4,000 eighth-graders applied to the school, including 500 Catholic-school kids, the city Department of Education said. But the principal failed to “mark for priority” 207 Catholic-school students who had attended a Maspeth information session. None got offered seats.

The school sent acceptance letters to 370 students — all from public schools.

Maspeth HS is a “limited unscreened” school — one of 225 in the city — which gives admission priority to students who live nearby and attend its information sessions or open houses.

These schools send a list of those applicants to the DOE, which gives them priority in a “random” lottery.

The system is ripe for abuse by principals who want to exclude certain students or favor others, critics say.

Principal Khurshid Abdul-Mutakabbir told parents at a Juniper Park Civic Association meeting on March 16 he made a “clerical error” in omitting all Catholic-school kids from the list.

But Abdul-Mutakabbir told civic leaders in a prior phone call that parochial applicants pose a “problem,” Juniper Hill president Bob Holden told The Post.

“He said, ‘In all honesty parochial schools are a problem because many of the students opt out and don’t go to my school. That leaves a seat [empty] and it costs the school funding,’” said Holden, who called for an investigation.

After parents got wind of the omissions and complained, DOE officials entered 207 parochial-school applicants who had attended an open house or information session into a second lottery. On Tuesday, it offered seats to 66 of them — 15 percent of the accepted freshmen.

“All students who should have received an offer have received one,” said DOE spokesman Michael Aciman.

But double rejections left some Queens families distraught.

“I haven’t seen my son cry before and he’s cried twice this past week,” said Maspeth resident Santo Vicino, whose son was not given a slot. “I’m livid. Like any parent I would cut my veins for my kid.”

The scandal exposes flaws in the city’s complex school-choice system “and the way that schools can game it for their own purposes” said Brooklyn College education professor David Bloomfield.

“These schools give preferential treatment to children whose parents have the time and resources to take them to open houses,” Bloomfield said. “It’s doubly unfair if principals don’t play by the rules.”

New York University education professor Sean Corcoran agreed that principals can cheat.

“They can tinker with the lists for any number of reasons — like weeding out kids who are lower-achieving, come from poor neighborhoods, or just don’t seem motivated enough to go to that school,” he said….

Fire the savage. You have a better chance of finding Hoffa before getting the truth out of this lying savage.

If the principal had been Caucasian / Christian and did the same thing to minority students, Maspeth would be burned to the ground.

    • JacksonPearson

Seems to me, there’s a good case here for the U.S. Department of Justice, and U.S. Department of Education to pay this school principal a visit.

      • Keith

Why would they want to do that, you forget this Head is a muslim he is not a white Caucasian being either a Christian or Atheist. Nor is he a Hindu, Sikh, Jew, Buddhist or any of the many other religions in the world.
As a muslim he is, of course, above the law of the land that everyone else has to abide by and the government will be afraid of the backlash if he was investigated.

      • santashandler

Well, there’s no time for that. They’re too busy looking for Russians in Trump’s hotel……

Meanwhile, we’re still trying to figure out why those JCC terror bomb threats stopped being terrorism when an Israeli was arrested for them.

    • arturo

Not to forget, that there are other threats to Jews that have not been addressed.

      • unboundried

I guess we’ll have to wait and see who the culprit is before we decide if they’re terrorism. Because there is a double standard.

Why is a radical Muslim teaching or holding a position in any of our schools? FIRE HIS ASS!

    • IzlamIsTyranny

      “radical”, LOL.

      • Karen

Why isn’t he ‘radical’??? Any other ‘person’ would NOT have excluded 500 CHRISTIAN students, ESPECIALLY after they attended the ‘information session’? And what about those CHRISTIAN students who attended there previously?!?!? Coincidence? Not when it comes to lying ass taqiyya mussie pigs!!

        • IzlamIsTyranny

I don’t really care! IZLAME is a damn CULT not a religion!!! If ya don’t want people ‘profile’, then STOP pushing IZLAME the CULT on EVERYONE!!!! And they didn’t KILL the 500 students because that asswipe doesn’t want the school closed. How else would he GROOM other little mussies for jihad?!?!??!?!

  • Richard

For me, they all have to go! Islam and its adherents, like this principal, are part of a worldwide cult of violence, hatred, totalitarianism and conquest. It is not a religion in the traditional sense. We are all infidels who must be conquered, murdered or enslaved if we do not convert to their ways of life.

    • Janet

Exactly! Now I wish the liberal left would get a clue. They’re so busy kissing Muslim butts that they are totally blind to what Islam is really about and what their goals are. Makes me crazy when they say “but Islam is a religion of peace” Right, tell that to the Christians and Jews in the Middle East!

  • BooBooBaby

Now imagine if 500 black students were purposely left out…..because they were Black! Omg! We would Never hear the end of it! ALL Libtard Media and Politicians would be Freaking Out!

  • Keith

Is this a muslim school? Or is it a school that has a bit more freedom in choosing its own pupils. As EB says it does look like the Trojan Horse problem that was exposed here in Britain a couple of years ago and still isn’t completely eradicated today.

  • RealEngineer2

Quote, “Maspeth HS is a limited unscreened school — one of 225 in the city — which gives admission priority to students who live nearby and attend its information sessions or open houses.”

One of my buildings is literally 2 blocks away from this school, and I walk past it almost every day. It has long been rumored by my tenants as “prejudiced”.

FIRST, let’s take a look at Maspeth “demographics”…. “75.7% White, 2.2% Black, 10.9% Asian, and 13.9% another race.”

NOW, go ahead to the Maspeth HS web site (www.maspethhighschool_dot_org), resplendent with photos of the “representative student body”, and see if you can even count White students as 10% of those pictured there.

So, “admission priority to students who live nearby”? Draw your own conclusions… pictures say a thousand words, don’t they?

    • Right near the school is also Elmhurst, Queens, and Woodside Queens is also in the area. Both areas are heavily Hispanic and Asia-Pacific. Of course they will throw off the demographics. The school is in Maspeth, but right at the southeast corner—walk down 57 Avenue over the tracks and Elmhurst starts. Middle Village is majority white, but other nearby neighborhoods are not.

      • RealEngineer2

Government commits to a proper academic environment, the community accepts, allows the school to be built, and the next thing you know, 99% of the students are BUSSING IN from Elmhurst, Woodside, and Flushing, and only a handful are walking from MASPETH (who the school was SUPPOSED to PRIORITIZE and ACCOMMODATE- at least that’s what they told us at community
meetings before the school went up).

Rejecting White students from within walking distance to SPECIFICALLY accommodate ethnic students bussed in WOULD BE ILLEGAL. However, the community feels cheated and betrayed as once again, the concerns of the middle class are the lowest priority and set aside to accommodate others FIRST.

        • The school is at the edge of Maspeth…people would be walking in from Elmhurst or Middle Village. If the school was on 65 Place or Maurice Avenue, that’s central.

          • RealEngineer2

The geometry of the coordinates is understood. NEVERTHELESS, the FACT REMAINS no students were accepted even from CATHOLIC SCHOOLS in Elmhurst, Middle Village, and Woodside, either, regardless of Maspeth High being at “the edge of Maspeth”.

Your contention is so few come in from Maspeth, as the school borders other neighborhoods and welcomes “qualified” ETHNIC students from Elmhurst, Middle Village, and Woodside, yet the fact CATHOLIC SCHOOL STUDENTS ***ALSO*** from Elmhurst, Middle Village, and
Woodside WERE NOT ACCEPTED is completely dismissed.

This renders your argument as a moot point, as ALL CATHOLIC SCHOOL STUDENTS were omitted, REGARDLESS of their proximity to the “Maspeth border”; quote, “he made a ‘clerical error’ in omitting ***ALL*** Catholic-school kids from the list.”

          • IzlamIsTyranny

Maybe I missed it but I didn’t see where the criteria for admission to the school was explained. It the selection process is simply done behind closed doors and made by one or two people then there’s a big problem here. Hope the parents push the envelope on this.

    1. Any limited unscreened admissions system for high schools should be run from the NYC Schools headquarters at 52 Chambers Street instead of with principals, so that there is less manipulation and abuse in the system and more focus on merit.
    2. The school in question is at the corner of 74 Street and 57 Avenue in Queens, NY (just off of Grand Avenue). How many of the Catholic students applied were from Elmhurst (on the other side of the CSX tracks) Maspeth, Middle Village (on the other side of the Long Island Expressway), or Woodside?
    3. If a student is accepted and then declines, have a waiting list. The principal’s excuse there doesn’t fly.

@disqus_nih6Sv73PO:disqus – someone suing a Catholic school over something like this would likely lose…as a religious school, they are going to give preference to other Catholics (unless the school is run as a charter school).

@robertbatchelor:disqus – read the NY Post link. If that’s not clear enough—it’s an idea that preference for certain high schools goes to those who live in the area or attend an information session. In this case, it likely means Elmhurst Maspeth, Woodside, and Middle Village in Queens, NY (the article is very NYC-specific); the school is on the southeastern edge of Maspeth where Middle Village and Elmhurst meet.

Mr. Abdul-Mutakabbir is not Muslim. Google is your friend, use it.

Mr. Abdul-Mutakabbir was born and raised in Boston, Massachusetts. He went to Catholic Schools from grades one to twelve. He attended a Jesuit high school, Boston College High School, then graduated from Howard University in Washington, D.C. After college, he worked on Wall Street as a Financial Analyst, first at Salomon Brothers, then at Citibank, and finally at Deutche Bank. Always proficient at mathematics, he shifted gears and became a math teacher and taught at Carnarsie High, and then transferred to a small high school in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn. In 2010, he was admitted to the New Leaders, New School program at Boston University, and in 2011 he became principal of Maspeth High School. The school moved new building on 57th Street in Maspeth in 2012. Mr. Abdul-Mutakabbir is married with three children and lives in Lefferts Gardens.

Q: What would we be surprised to learn about Khurshid Abdul-Mutakabbir?

A: You would be surprised to know that I’m not Middle Eastern and that I don’t have any Middle Eastern background. That’s usually the biggest surprise, and that my mother’s Irish and my father is from the Caribbean. And also that I have a dry sense of humor. I like to laugh and joke, although I come off as being very serious and stern.

Leave it to Ms. Geller to get this wrong about this man. It is a Dept of Education error.

After one year at the Metropolitan Campus on Metropolitan Avenue, Maspeth High School moved to its own building located at 54-40 74th Street in Maspeth, Queens, adjacent to the Long Island Expressway and between 57th Avenue and Grand Avenue.

The founding principal of Maspeth High School is Khurshid Abdul-Mutakabbir who proposed a classical high school model to the New York City Department of Education in December 2010. His proposal was accepted on January 4, 2011 and matched to the newly constructed Maspeth High School campus building for opening the following September.

Maspeth High School is one of the only classical public high schools in New York City and it requires Freshman and Sophomores to take Mandarin Chinese, while Juniors and Seniors take Latin. Also required, is four years of Fine or Performing Arts, along with having to perform three declamation pieces per year.
