ROSLINDALE, Mass. (WHDH) – One person is dead following an officer-involved shooting in Roslindale Tuesday morning, where the FBI and Joint Terrorism Task Force were also on scene.
According to Boston Police, the male suspect was wielding a military-style knife and went after an officer. Police said the suspect was under federal surveillance and when he was approached outside a CVS he pulled out the knife.
The officer shot the suspect outside a CVS store in the city’s Roslindale neighborhood at about 7 a.m. Tuesday.
The suspect was taken to Brigham and Women’s Hospital where he was later pronounced dead.
The officer was also taken to the hospital for an evaluation.
Boston Police Commissioner Bill Evans said he did not have specific details on why the suspect was under surveillance by the FBI and Joint Terrorism Task Force, but the scene is still active and under investigation.
“Our officers in conjunction with the Joint Terrorism Task Force, had a suspect under surveillance here at this location. At that time, our officers, along with the FBI, confronted the suspect, identified themselves as Boston Police and FBI. At that particular time, the suspect turned, he pulled out a military-type knife. The officers asked him several times to put that knife down, they gave him several commands,” said Evans. “Again, several more orders to put down, and at that point, he came within the proximity that the officers used deadly force. The suspect was shot and taken to Brigham and Women’s Hospital where he’s declared deceased at this time.”
Evans said he did not know whether there were customers outside the CVS at the time of the incident.
“It’s a black, large knife, you know, military style and, you know, very damaging, could do a lot of damage. I think our officers tried our best with the FBI to convince him to put down the knife, but it left us no choice, and it’s an active investigation with the Joint Terrorism Task Force,” said Evans.
Mayor Marty Walsh, who was also on scene, said he would leave any commenting on the situation to Boston Police and the FBI.
Preliminary information indicated that one agent fired his weapon as well.
