The Redskins case mirrors our own SIOA (Stop the Islamization of America) trademark case. The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) refused to register the name as a trademark, arguing that it could be disparaging to American Muslims.
We have filed an appeal to the Supreme Court and the legal team for the Redskins have been watching our case very closely, as we started our fight before they did, so we are further down the road in the legal process. We are waiting to hear if the Supreme Court will hear our case.
Reuters wrote of our case, “The case is being watched by trademark experts for its potential to influence an ongoing fight at the USPTO over whether Washington’s NFL team should lose its trademark for being disparaging to Native Americans, says Christine Farley, who teaches trademark law at the American University Washington College of Law.”

“On the week that Islamists murder over ‘offensive’ cartoon, Obama’s DOJ intervenes against Redskins’ logo,” Right Scoop, January 9, 2014
If I were to author a dictionary, I know what I would put under “irony”…
From the Los Angeles Times:
The Native Americans fighting the Washington Redskins over the team’s trademark protections in a federal lawsuit got an important boost Friday when the Justice Department declared that it would intervene in a key aspect of the twisted legal case.
Dana J. Boente, U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, filed a notice in the lawsuit on Friday that the Justice Department would defend the constitutionality of a key provision of the Lanham Act, which bars trademarks that may disparage or bring people into “contempt or disrepute.”
What a perfect week for Obama to come out against the Redskins’ name and logo because it’s “offensive.”
In other words, the future must not belong to those who slander Native Americans!!!
Thankfully, Native Americans only put up drum circle* protests instead of shooting up offices.
