The Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant or Islamic State of Iraq and Syria, abbreviated as ISIS or ISIL, is a devout Muslim group actively waging jihad in Iraq and Syria. They are notorious for their vicious savagery (to stand out among jihadist groups takes some doing) and bloodshed.
It was established in the early years of the Iraq War, and pledged allegiance to al-Qaeda in 2004, becoming known as al-Qaeda in Iraq. The group was composed of and supported by a variety of insurgent groups, including its predecessor organisation, the Mujahideen Shura Council, Al-Qaeda, Jaysh al-Fatiheen, Jund al-Sahaba, Katbiyan Ansar Al-Tawhid wal Sunnah, Jeish al-Taiifa al-Mansoura, etc., and other clans whose population is of Sunni faith. It aimed to establish a caliphate in the Sunni majority populated regions of Iraq, later expanding this to include Syria.
I know fantasy Obama claims that al Qaeda is “on the run.” He also claims that Obamacare is a success. The fact is that ISIS is growing in numbers and power.
…during the latter stages of the Iraq War, by late 2012 the group was thought to have renewed its strength and more than doubled its number of members.
Thank you, President Obama.
On January 23, 2014, jihadi sources on Al-Fida’ forum reported that several tribes in Syria have pledged allegiance to the Islamic State of Iraq and Al-Sham (ISIS). Another report said that a prominent military commander of the Islamist Alwiyat Al-Habib Al-Mustafa group has joined ISIS as well.
On January 25, 2014, the Twitter account “The State of Iraq and Al-Sham,” which supports The Islamic State of Iraq and Al-Sham (ISIS), posted an audio message by someone calling himself Abu Sayyaf Al-Ansari, who announced that he and his comrades in Tripoli, Lebanon, have sworn fealty to Abu Bakr Al-Baghdadi and have joined his organization – ISIS.
