Finally an American president responds to the world’s largest sponsor of terror. Obama would never.

USS Thunderbolt fires warning shots at Iranian vessel

US Navy ship fires warning shots at Iranian ship in Persian Gulf

A U.S. Navy ship fired warning shots at an Iranian ship in the Persian Gulf on Tuesday, U.S. defense officials confirmed to Fox News.

The U.S. Navy coastal patrol ship fired warning shots from its .50-caliber machine gun at an Iranian patrol boat when it came within 150 yards of the ship in the Persian Gulf, according to two U.S. defense officials.

The Iranian ship ignored repeated radio calls from the USS Thunderbolt, which also launched flares to warn the fast approaching Iranian ship, officials said.

The incident happened Tuesday as a formation of U.S. Navy warships was doing an exercise in the Northern Persian Gulf.

It’s the first time since January a U.S. Navy warship has fired warning shots at an Iranian vessel which approached too close.

Uhh, that might be an over-simplification, Maam.
Nuclear Physics is not all that simple. Most of the post here are treading toward a scorched earth solution… at least I am! Send them and the North Koreans a message, “Old Soldiers Never Die” and some legendary ones may never “fade away”! The words in quotation marks were taken from Gen. Douglas MacArthur’s farewell speech. He wanted to obliterate the North Koreans, back in the 1950’s, when I was still a child. He was relieved of his Command and sent into retirement by Pres. Harry Truman (a Democrap, but a lot like our POTUS, today! A firebrand, for sure. You don’t cross the guy, that nuked Japan and ended WWII. He meant exactly what he said and he was true to his wife, as far as anyone knows! That says a lot about any man in a position of honor, loyalty & respect!

I trust your point is, that our current POTUS, is not a vet? I am a veteran and can guarantee you, vets are a cross section of the population and none have a lock on virtue.

Many are clueless to history and do not know, that Gen.MacArthur commanded the lower ranking Geo. Patton to ride mounted cavalry, down on and disperse a D.C. encampment of WWI veterans, many camped with their families and many with disabilities, that were protesting for their promised service bonuses, during the Great Depression.

My point is, Military officers are well schooled in leadership and how to enforce discipline, but then again so are corporate executives and both are preferred to career politicians.

They know we will show restraint. They’re testing how much restraint we will show. They’re testing how close they can get, and estimating whether they can close that distance for a ramming attack before being sunk. 150 yards is close.

Fredrick Rehders
Fredrick Rehders

150 yards is carbine range! Maybe it’s time to drop leaflets, like we did on Japan and tell the civilians to get out of Tehran, before we level it. That just might get their attention. No land forces, or bombers, just sub & surface ship cruise missiles. Level the cockroach infected city and call it Pest Control!

I think a burst of .50 cal in the water off the bow will get the message across, loud and clear.

Actually Manual… a burst of .50 cal. IN THE BOW will get the message across, louder & clearer! I prefer cannon, say at least 105s, but 155s are bigger and better! I am not opposed to torpedoes or even Cruise Missiles, though I would like to see our guys sink their piss ant boats and still be able to rescue and take prisoners. (a) we need a reason to make use of a perfectly good facility, affectionately known as “Gitmo”.
(b) Perhaps we could barter them back to Iran, before they start declaring LGBT rights… just a matter of time for spoiled perverts, you know!

Under Obummer’s administration, they would call a national security council meeting. Debated it for a few weeks. Passed it off to congress. Played it out on CNN, gone back for a few more meetings and then, decided they weren’t going to fire back. Under Trump, not so much. If Iran continues this type of behavior, which they probably will, they will learn in short order there is a new sheriff in town. And he will fire back.

We’ve been far too lenient on the Iranians for far too long. They disregard warning shots and view them as the product of a nation that has so far been handicapped at taking action.

Capture the crew like they did to the US crew last year. Hold them for prisoner swap for the Americans the Iranians hold. Alternately, blow them out of the water. They won’t do it a second time.

Let’s not leave out, Commander Bucher surrendering the USS Pueblo, with highly sensitive equipment on board, to a couple of North Korean patrol boats, when his duty was to scuttle his ship, rather than give it up, in 1968, during the failed presidency of Demonrat LBJ !

What? No USS Cole (DDG-67) October 12, 2000, where the US let’s the enemy blow up the American ship?

What? No surrender like on January 12, 2016, two United States Navy riverine command boats cruising from Kuwait to Bahrain with a combined crew of nine men and one woman on board strayed into Iranian territorial waters and patrol craft of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Navy seized the craft and detained the crew at a military base on Farsi Island?

Maybe the US Navy is out of the surrender and capitulation business.

The US Navy needs to be off the coast of Libya and shooting at the troop carrier ships of the Islamic Invasion Army of Europe. There are plenty of targets for the US Navy to shoot at in the Mediterranean to stop the Islamic Invasion Army of Europe.

So….I suppose the next step in this outrageous scenario is to allow an armed Iranian boarding party to inspect our ships, but only after arresting the captains and crew? Don’t laugh! After all, we don’t want to make the Russians, the Chinese and the Muslims mad at us. If I were Secretary of the Navy, and with the approval of the President via a completely rewritten foreign policy on handling threats of war, the Iranian ship would be now resting quietly on the bottom of the Persian Gulf. North Korea, China and Iran (among others, including the feckless UN) still consider the U.S. to be the slobbering, whimpering fat boy in the schoolyard, ripe for pickins by the first pint-sized bully who decides to make a name for himself in the ‘hood.

I thought Trump would have remembered the U.S.S. Cole incident and the Farsi Island fiasco by issuing a standing Executive Order to eliminate any further similar threats to our naval vessels. We all knew Obama was too weak to stand up to such muscle-flexing by our enemies, and I am floored that his legacy of weakness and apology apparently still persists.

But what do I know? I’m only an 80-year-old who still remembers WWII—even as a child— and that our country at that time in our history in no way mirrors the lack of leadership our Washington, D.C. politicians have assumed in recent decades.

The details of this incident don’t rest on Trump, but on the skipper of the Thunderbolt. He ordered the warning shots to be fired. I don’t like the idea of the Iranian vessel being allowed within 150 yards, but I haven’t seen any of the details.

Yup! Might, really can be Right, under certain circumstances! The real problem is, it wouldn’t send a large enough message to change their errant behavior. Why waste ammo? Just send the SOB to the bottom, rescue any survivors and hold them in Gitmo, until Iran gave back all of that cash Obammy sent them, on pallets, in an unmarked plane, the middle of the night! Taking severe retaliatory action and an on-going policy utilizing overwhelming Might and nothing short of it, will ever get their attention!

Its armament includes two Mk38 chain guns, two Mk19 automatic grenade launchers, and two .50 caliber (12.7m) machine guns. – how about a wee burp from the two chain guns –

Fredrick Rehders

Pretty substantial fire power, right there..two, Mk38- 25mm, chain guns (twice the size of a .50 caliber) @ 200 rnds per minute, over 9 feet long and weighing 250 pounds ea. That would put up a noteworthy resistance to most opponents on the sea… not all, but most!
