Truce on an open thread

Shreds of my soul on Friday night open thread.

“Treaty,” by Leonard Cohen:

I’ve seen you change the water into wine
I’ve seen you change it back to water too
I sit at your table every night
I try but I just don’t get high with you

Story continues below advertisement

I wish there was a treaty we could sign
I do not care who takes this bloody hill
I’m angry and I’m tired all the time
I wish there was a treaty
I wish there was a treaty
Between your love and mine

They’re dancing in the street, it’s Jubilee
We sold ourselves for love but now we’re free
I’m sorry for the ghost I made you be
Only one of us was real and that was me

I haven’t said a word since you’ve been gone
That any liar couldn’t say as well
I just can’t believe the static coming on
You were my ground, my safe and sound
You were my aerial

The fields are crying out, it’s Jubilee
We sold ourselves for love but now we’re free
I’m sorry for the ghost I made you be
Only one of us was real and that was me

I heard the snake was baffled by his sin
He shed his scales to find the snake within
But born again is born without a skin
The poison enters into everything

And I wish there was a treaty we could sign
I do not care who takes this bloody hill
I’m angry and I’m tired all the time
I wish there was a treaty
I wish there was a treaty
Between your love and mine

Those who’ve had a NDE (Near Death Experience) can relate to the transparency of the body.
Is the curse of the amulet immortality? After an NDE, who would even want to be immortal.

Pamela, you introduced me to Leonard Cohen just a few short years ago – on the occasion of his last live concert in NYC. Of course, I’d heard of him, but he never crossed my path musically (let alone as a poet!). Between Opera, Rock N Roll, Ethnic Music and, to a lesser degree, Rhythm & Blues, somehow i missed Leonard Cohen! But, after your wonderful dedication to his art on a Friday night those few years ago, I’ve seen & heard him on YouTube, plus other chance opportunities. What an incredible talent and artist! I’m embarrassed to admit that at first I thought he was a bit pretentious; but as I listened – actually in rapt attention and fascination – to his gravelly voice, totally unique poetry, and spoken-sung presentation of each piece, I’ve become a huge fan! All i can say, Pam, is thank you mille fois for sharing those Leonard Cohen moments with us!
