May 29, 1453: Jihad Carnage and the Fall of Christian Constantinople

72

Painting by Theofilos Hatzimihail (d. 1934)

Extracts from my “The Legacy of Jihad,” (2005/2008) pp. 616-618:

[Both Turkish and Christian chroniclers provide graphic evidence of the wanton pillage and slaughter of non-combatants following the Ottoman jihad conquest of Constantinople in 1453. First from the Turkish sources]:

Story continues below advertisement

“Sultan Mehmed (in order to) arouse greater zeal for the way of God issued an order (that the city was to be) plundered. And from all directions they (gazis) came forcefully and violently (to join) the army. They entered the city, they passed the infidels over the sword (i.e. slew them) and…they pillage and looted, they took captive the youths and maidens, and they took theirgoods and valuables whatever there was of them…” [Urudj]

[the_ad id=”90673″]

“The gazis [jihadists] entered the city, cut off the head of the emperor, captured Kyr Loukas and his family…and they slew the miserable common people..They placed people and families in chains and placed metal rings on their necks.” [Neshri]

[Speros Vryonis, Jr. has summarized the key contents of letters sent by Sultan Mehmed himself to various Muslim potentates of the Near East]:

“In his letter to the sultan of Egypt, Mehmed writes that his army killed many of the inhabitants, enslaved many others (those that remained), plundered the treasures of the city, ‘cleaned out’ the priests and took over the churches…To the Sherif of Mecca he writes that they killed the ruler of Constantinople, they killed the “pagan” inhabitants and destroyed their houses. The soldiers smashed the crosses, looted the wealth and properties and enslaved their children and youths. ‘They cleared these places of their monkish filth and Christian impurity’…In yet another letter he informs Cihan Shah Mirza of Iran that the inhabitants of the city have become food for the swords and arrows of the gazis; that they plundered their children, possessions and houses; that those men and women who survived the massacre were thrown into chains.”

[The Christian sources, include this narrative by Ducas who gathered eyewitness accounts, and visited Constantinople shortly after its conquest]:

“(Then) the Turks arrived at the church [the great church of St. Sophia], pillaging, slaughtering, and enslaving. They enslaved all those that survived. They smashed the icons in the church, took their adornments as well as all that was moveable in the church…Those of (the Greeks) who went off to their houses were captured before arriving there. Others upon reaching their houses found them empty of children, wives, and possessions and before (they began) wailing and weeping were themselves bound with their hands behind them. Others coming to their houses and having found their wife and children being led off, were tied and bound with their most beloved…They (the Turks) slew mercilessly all the elderly, both men and women, in (their) homes, who were not able to leave their homes because of illness or old age. The newborn infants were thrown into the streets…And as many of the (Greek) aristocrats and nobles of the officials of the palace that he (Mehmed) ransomed, sending them all to the “speculator” he executed them. He selected their wives and children, the beautiful daughters and shapely youths and turned them over to the head eunuch to guard them, and the remaining captives he turned over to others to guard over them…And the entire city was to be seen in the tents of the army, and the city lay deserted, naked, mute, having neither form nor beauty.”

[From the contemporary 15th century historian Critobulus of Imbros:]

“Then a great slaughter occurred of those who happened to be there: some of them were on the streets, for they had already left the houses and were running toward the tumult when they fell unexpectedly on the swords of the soldiers; others were in their own homes and fell victims to the violence of the Janissaries and other soldiers, without any rhyme or reason; others were resisting relying on their own courage; still others were fleeing to the churches and making supplication- men, women, and children, everyone, for there was no quarter given…The soldiers fell on them with anger and great wrath…Now in general they killed so as to frighten all the City, and terrorize and enslave all by the slaughter.”

So, why did they do it? Why destroy a thousand year old civilization? Well, to listen to this presentation from Islamicity, it had something vaguely to do with the Byzantines not treating Christians right. But mostly they did it because Muhammad said they should.

We can only hope that sanity eventually prevails, but Trump needs to wake up to this horrible mess, get organized and stop the rot. Will it take another 9/11 for rage to occur? When Constantinople finally fell in 1453 after hundreds of years of Muslim and other efforts to defeat it, it was a mere shadow of the great city it once was, years earlier ravaged by a plague that killed half the population. When Mehmed II arrived with 80,000 or more troops, there were only about 15,000 defenders and the city had only about 50,000 inhabitants. Of course afterwards Mehmed II invaded south-east Europe where Vlad Tsepis, Count Dracula, impaled Muslims by the thousands. When Mehmed’s Ottoman Muslims’ nerve broke at that sight of their ‘buddies’ impaled in Tsepi’s deserted city, hey fled south, but Tsepis followed them and slaughtered the bastards in night attacks.

Oh dear. Shame history is no longer taught in our schools. Constantinople was the richest, largest city in Europe in the 12th. century. Once there were two Christian Empires–Roman in the West, Byzantine in the East. After the fall of the Roman Empire in the 5th century, Byzantium took their old Med. coast, Italy, North Africa and held them for 200 years. It was the epicentre of trade, arts, culture, science, East met West. It held spiritual power and wealth besides which Dubai etc. are just tawdry bling. Hence the devastation in 1453 was not just the destruction of one insignificant city, but of an Empire, of Christianity being defeated by Islam,of a light being extinguished. Rather like a premonition of the fate which will befall us. Shows first impressions can be so deceptive, when we met on another PG article.

► That’s one perspective. Another is that the Greek legacy languished in the Byzantine era, and Arabs revived interest in it and carried it to western Europe through Spain

Besides, what’s the point of this article recalling a six century old war? there’s literally no habitable place on Earth that has not violently changed hands many times over – usually countless times.

Our past, our present, and our future. … The destruction of Eastern Rome / Greek Rome / or Byzantium (whatever you want to call it) was the spark that led to the eventual success of the West – and most of the West’s problems arise from it as well.

We are not willing to end it. None of our ‘tribes’ have the will to fight for our heritage while there is still time.

This is why it is so essential for Americans to keep fighting – and to search for an antidote to Libtardism. If we cannot even talk about the problem, we cannot educate (red pill) enough drones to organize an actual resistance.

(And yes – ‘resistance’ is a joke – as the Left resists us – as if shooting the firemen will stop their house from burning down.)

amen. it is obvious to many, but not western military leaders who are fighting yesterday’s wars, but warfare in the 21st century will be fought by unarmed hoardes pouring across the borders of western civilization taking advantage of the modern, soft version of Christianity where we provide charity and turn the other cheek. well guess what, that will get us all killed. we need to acknowledge that muslims are enemies, make war on them, and return to the WW2 version of Christianity which was to make war so horrible for our enemies that they quit trying to kill us, and to execute their evil leaders. pretty simple. elect me president and TSA lines at the airport disappear within a year

Innocents Abroad, I think that is the book you are referring to
(I could be mistaken, he wrote many books)
Started in 1867, was more of a travel book than anything
There is no mention that I know of about 35000 Jews and Christians
Being killed and left to rot in the streets

Here is a quote from Mark Twain
“It is my hope that both the Christians and the Jews will be damned;
And to that end I am working all my influence. Help me pray…”
Mark Twain goes on to say, he would choose Jews over Christians
He goes on to say…”Christianity has deluged the world with blood and tears……
From a letter to Henry Rogers, 26 July 1898

Mark Twain has also said, Concerning the Jews, 1896(a short essay)
“The Jew is a money getter; and in getting his money he is a very serious obstruction to less capable neighbors who are on the same quest.”
Mark Twain suggested the Jews were not persecuted over religion
But because of their passion and brilliance for business

It was Damascus!….In “Innocents Abroad,” 1869, which established his reputation as a writer, Mark Twain described Syria under the Ottoman Turkish Empire: “Then we called at the tomb of Mahomet’s children and at … the mausoleum of the five thousand Christians who were massacred in Damascus in 1861 by the Turks. They say those narrow streets ran blood for several days, and that men, women and children were butchered indiscriminately and left to rot by hundreds all through the Christian quarter; they say, further, that the stench was dreadful. All the Christians who could get away fled from the city, and the Mohammedans would not defile their hands by burying the ‘infidel dogs.’ The thirst for blood extended to the high lands of Hermon and Anti-Lebanon, and in a short time twenty-five thousand more Christians were massacred and their possessions laid waste. …”

OK, I found the section of the book you quote from
Twain did not see such things himself
The number of 35000 lying dead and rotting in streets
From you original post was very misleading
(Unintentionally I am sure)
Probably why I did not remember seeing it in the book
I do not doubt the stories are true
The way I understand the book is as 2 horrific events
One in a town and another mass murderer in the countryside
Thank-you for reminding me of the book and it’s relevance even today, I will have to read it again.
(Just to see what would happen I had a few minutes of spare time and read,………..
Page 573 is extremely good, sums up the world of religion
Scary part is, nothing has changed since Twain’s time

Sad isn’t it that history is repeating itself all over again. The current leaders and the EU know full what they’ve done, it was deliberate and intentional. The same applies to America. Obama and Bush before him knew full well what was going to happen and fomented it. See, Obama, Hillary and many others here in America hate Christianity and Judaism. Obama and Hillary outright called then defamatory names. Trumps trying to stop any and all Muslims from coming into America before there is another major terrorist attack and its results in some seriously deadly Civil conflict. Its really kinda started already in a very serious verbal conflict which if its not resolved will result in bullets and bombs, the burning of mosques and anything having to do with Islam. I’ll and many millions more Americans won’t allow Islam to spread and take over America.

WOW…sort of reminds me of my readings of the Japanese and German Military invasions of China in 1937-38. Eastern Europe and the Soviet Union in 1941. Whole villages disappeared to the wanton slaughter of their inhabitants. Rape of the young and old females, The tossing of babies into the air and catching them on the bayonet. So the 30’s and 40’s were a repeat of 1453. Seems to me someone forgot to learn their history and was doomed to repeat it. I guess just 80 years after the start of World War II we are doomed to repeat history once again.
