Sir Winston Churchill’s family begged him not to convert to Islam, letter reveals

He might have been a staunch protector of the British Empire, but the British Prime Minister had a love of the Orient and Islam.

The family of Sir Winston Churchill urged him to “fight against” the desire to convert to Islam, a newly discovered letter has revealed.

The Prime Minister who led Britain to victory in World War Two was apparently so taken with Islam and the culture of the Orient that his family wrote to try and persuade him not to become a Muslim.

In a letter dated August 1907 Churchill’s soon to be sister-in-law wrote to him: “Please don’t become converted to Islam; I have noticed in your disposition a tendency to orientalise, Pasha-like tendencies, I really have.

“If you come into contact with Islam your conversion might be effected with greater ease than you might have supposed, call of the blood, don’t you know what I mean, do fight against it.”

The letter, discovered by a history research fellow at Cambridge University, Warren Dockter, was written by Lady Gwendoline Bertie who married Churchill’s brother Jack.

“Churchill never seriously considered converting,” Dr Dockter told The Independent. “He was more or less an atheist by this time anyway. He did however have a fascination with Islamic culture which was common among Victorians.”

Churchill had opportunity to observe Islamic society when he served as an officer of the British Army in Sudan. In a letter written to Lady Lytton in 1907 Churchill wrote that he “wished he were” a Pasha, which was a rank of distinction in the Ottoman Empire.

He even took to dressing in Arab clothes in private – an enthusiasm he shared with his good friend the poet Wilfrid S. Blunt. But Dr Dockter thinks Churchill’s family need never have worried about his interest in Islam.

“[Lady Gwendoline Bertie] would have been worried because Churchill was leaving for an African tour and she would have known Churchill had been seeing his friend, Wilfrid S. Blunt, who was a renowned Arabist, anti-imperialist and poet. Though he and Churchill were friends and dressed in Arabian dress at times for Blunt’s eccentric parties, they rarely agreed.”

In 1940, when Churchill was leading Britain’s fight against Nazi Germany, he gave his support to plans to build what became the London Central Mosque in Regent’s Park – putting aside £100,000 for the purpose – in the hope of winning the support of Muslim countries in the war.

He later told the House of Commons that “many of our friends in Muslim countries” had expressed appreciation for this “gift”.

But while he was vocal in his admiration for Islam, Churchill was not uncritical. “The fact that in Mohammedan law every woman must belong to some man as his absolute property, either as a child, a wife, or a concubine, must delay the final extinction of slavery until the faith of Islam has ceased to be a great power among men,” he wrote in his 1899 account of Sudan, The River War.

“Individual Moslems may show splendid qualities, but the influence of the religion paralyses the social development of those who follow it. No stronger retrograde force exists in the world. Far and proselytizing faith.” Three things are distorting Islam. The discovery of oil in Arab countries, the creation of Israel and conversion rate in Europe. The real Islam is one of belief, prayer, fasting and charity. If Islam was really so bad then it would naturally die out like many other historical ideologies. The fact is that the Islam portrayed in media is not the one we Muslims know.

So…..Islamophobes have been using Churchill’s anti-Islamic quotes ONLY…..intentionally omitting his interest and secret desire to convert to Islam. Jihad does not have to mean violence, suicide bombing as all terrorism is not Islamic and anyone who practices it loses their Islam in fact and the only Muslim terrorists I can think of, are phonies in our eyes but allied and getting support from, indeed owe their existence to the USA and Israel. ISIS for example are a creation of the USA with lots of hands on help from their Wahhabi puppets (A small sect whose money and influence is undeserved but gives them an imbalance of influence as Islam’s face) in Saudi Arabia, Jordan and Qatar. As a UN report recently announced ISIS are being given full medical and other support from no less than Israel. These self professed (yet unrecognisable) Muslims appear mainly interested, indeed obsessed with killing any other Muslims who don’t bow down to their vicious and disgusting ideology which is even a bit of an embarrassment to their nearest ideological kin, the Wahhabi nut cases. Winston Churchill would have become a better man if he had become a Muslim, this would seem logical and that would have meant no smoking or drinking. As a convert myself it was quite miraculous given I was a heavy drinker but I stopped once and for all upon my own conversion. The mud brain which scoffs in ignorance at the beliefs of others would never comprehend the power of religion to change a man’s life I do not doubt.

The Bible and the Quran both agree that Jesus was born by miraculous birth to the Virgin Mary. There is a chapter in the Quran named Mary and she is mentioned 34 times in the Quran, which is much more than the entire New Testament. She is honoured greatly in Islam and is celebrated as a role model for Muslim women worldwide. For Muslims, Jesus was the seal of the Hebrew Prophets and a man of perfect purity. Unlike all other human beings, except his mother Mary, he was not touched by Satan at his birth. In the Quran, when Satan attempted to approach the child, he was only able to touch the covering caul. The Quran has great regard for Jesus where he is mentioned 25 times in contrast to the Prophet Muhammad who is only mentioned four times.

There are many miracles attributed to the Quranic Jesus. One of these was his ability to speak from the cradle. His mother Mary was mocked for giving birth to a child out of wedlock. To protect his mother from the taunts of society, Jesus spoke and said; “Lo, I am God’s servant [and] a Prophet. […] Peace be upon me, the day I was born, and the day I die, and the day I am raised up alive!” (Quran 19:30-34) In addition, other well-known miracles recorded in both the Quran (with God’s permission) and the Bible include healing the sick, giving sight to the blind and bringing the dead to life.

The Quran makes clear that Jesus was sent to earth to preach a new gospel (Injil in Arabic), which reaffirmed the message of ‘One True God’, given to the earlier prophets. However, his teachings had become distorted over time. In the Quran, Jesus foretells the coming of a messenger after him named Ahmad, which is another name for Mohammad. Many Islamic scholars since the 8th century have argued that this is also evident in the Bible, originally written in Koine Greek”

It is impossible to have a serious debate on Islam. Every time anything remotely positive is said about Islam we are inundated with the same of out context quotes and 1400 years of supposed brutality. The truth that is forgotten by these people is that that western civilization through out its history has been the most genocidal inclined and proficient set of people that there has ever been. I could list these things but this has been done before and I am not sure that it is helpful or relevant.

One thing that is relevant now is take blame for what is happening now. The monsters of ISIL were directly caused by the brutalisation of the Iraq war, the negligent post war politics and the mistreatment of this prisoners (such as Abu Ghraib). More bombing only causes the creation of greater monsters – it was said at the time and was completely ignored. So was the potential for Sunni – Shia conflict, the “Lets give war a chance brigade” completely dismissed this. First step forward take responsibility for your actions.
