Sharia Canings Prove Tourist Draw in Supposed Moderate Indonesia

Tourists from Malaysia got an eyeful this week when the bus they rode to Lamteh Mosque in the Sharia-ruled Banda Aceh region of Indonesia stopped at a public caning.

The tourists were treated to a scene of a dozen different canings. The victims were deemed violators of Aceh’s strict sharia law impositions.

Public canings are a frequent site in Aceh, a sharia-governed region of Indonesia.

From Coconuts.co, a local newspaper:

“On Monday, dozens of tourists from Malaysia came by bus to visit the Lamteh Mosque in Banda Aceh to witness a dozen people getting publicly caned for crimes ranging from gambling to ikhtilat (the intermingling of men and women who are not married).

“Among the tourists was a Malaysian State Senator from Klanten, Dato Dr Johari bin Mat, who said that he respected Aceh implementation of Islamic law and use of public canin to ensure security and public order.

“‘This is the first time I witnessed a caning in Aceh. So far, I’ve only viewed through a video that was taken by a friend when he visited Aceh some time ago,’ said Dato Dr Johari bin Mat on Monday as quoted by Kompas.

“He also noted that sharia caning in Aceh, similar to how it is implemented in Malaysia, is not meant to injure the guilty party but to make them repent for their mistakes and ask for God’s forgiveness.

“In Malaysia, sharia caning (as opposed to judicial caning, which is also used there) is done in an enclosed area, away from public views. This is in contrast to how it is implemented in Aceh, where hundreds of people gather to watch (and often take pictures and video) of the canings, which take place on a raised platform for all to see.”

Indonesia is considered by Islam sympathizers as a nation of Muslim moderates.

In Aceh, however, sharia is the law, and it’s applied to both Muslims and non-Muslims alike.

Residents strongly support the region’s use of corporal punishment. However, Aceh has come under criticism from human rights groups all around the world, and within other spots in Indonesia, for its frequent use of public canings to punish those who violate sharia principles.

Tourism sure has changed over the years along with the tourists. The only people who would watch these kinds of happenings are sadists.

it’s kinda the modern equivalent of a ticket to the freaks… but yeah, with a sadistic edge… in the past, people would watch hangings

I agree that there were always people who liked to watch gruesome things, but they seem to be increasing with time.

Hmmm……Americans used to watch hangings in huge numbers. I imagine they would again if allowed to.

When I was young 7th grade students made a required field trip to the state’s main prison. We walked in the halls, saw inmates on death row, looked into the room that held that terrifying electric chair. In those days there were 4 crimes that were punishable by death: 1st degree murder, 1st degree rape, 1st degree kidnapping, and 1st degree armed robbery. I had not given any thought to becoming a criminal. But walking through that prison, and seeing the electric chair, made a powerful impression on my mind that I did not want to go that route – ever. It is possible that parents let their kids see public hangings to show them the horror of what life can become, not as entertainment. I wouldn’t go to a public hanging for fun even if it could be for Obama, or the other traitors infesting Washington. And the idea of videotaping a person being abused is beyond the pale, like Romans going to the Coliseum to watch Christians be ripped to pieces.

In fact that is a myth. Christians never had to fight lions in the Colosseum.

Can you give me the historical source for that. Also, do you deny that Nero set Rome on fire, blamed the Christians, and literally had roads lined with Christians who were set on fire to be used as torches? Obama, Hillary, and John McCain’s friends at ISIS do very similar today. I am interested is reading your information.

Lost in the mists of time I am afraid. As a Christian I too was skeptical but I distinctly remember this came up as a side issue in a historical discussion when I was reading classics at Uni in UK (Many years ago). Perhaps it would be easier to find written evidence in Roman history about this actually happening than not happening – we were too busy/lazy to take this subject any farther as it did not really come within the scope of that particular degree.

I do appreciate your trying. It will be awhile before I have time to thoroughly research this. Usually I focus on the Christian persecution of today that I can sometimes do a bit about.

I think focussing on the persecution of Christians today is the better option. Kia kaha

This article suggests it did happen, but wild beasts were employed and lions weren’t always available for the job:

‘Beheading tours’, throwing gays off roofs & stoning women to death in the village square because they were raped will soon be offered as extra-cost side trips by tour operators. All in the name of ‘diversity’, of course.

God’s henchmen do the violence and then God forgives the victim of the violence…..what a great social system.

Their god is not God. But it is fair to say that God does hate sin because sin is extremely destructive to individuals and society. He is loving and merciful. He created a gorgeous world for us to use and enjoy. But he also sees where sin leads, and wants to redeem the sinner’s life from that path. It would be analogous to a good parent, but there are few of those.

The monster known as Allah is certainly a lot different than , say, Jesus. I suppose comparing Allah with Jesus it is a bit like comparing the universe with its most important subset: life itself. The universe is a tough violent entity and its subset, life, is all forgiving, all healing, sweet respiration itself with all its beauty.

Jesus is my Savior and King. He was there in the beginning, long before He was manifested in the virgin birth to be made the Savior for all who would receive. Allah is a demon. He is allowed to do his harm only to show the depravity man can reach, and draw away those who do not love God’s ways.

Americans are remiss to judge in these instances, so long as we continue to maintain a ‘cash for persons’ private prison system.

It it a very good article. It’s hard to wrap my mind around how stupid you have to be to put Christians in refugee camps with Muslims, or under their dominion.

In Malaysia canning is used for drug traffickers and contempt of court. Never heard of it being used for a mingling offense. Aceh is a hard place. The tidal wave destroyed it some years back. I was given the real death toll in Aceh and Sumatra by a Malaysian Federal minister who was boots on the ground giving aid. It was far higher than reported anywhere. What you read was “fake news” at Indonesian insistence. I would never use the word “moderate” to modify Indonesia. Thousands have been murdered there in the last 25 years for being infidels. P.S. Canning is used in Singapore, too. It is generally considered an effective punishment and a strong deterrent. Both Singapore and Malaysia have crime rates far, far below the USA. No comparison possible.

Indonesia committed a genocide in E. Timor that killed hundreds of thousands of unbelievers in islum — mostly Catholic. No one has ever been punished for it and no reparations made to the victims’ families. I hope a tidal wave erases Indonesiastan from the face of the globe.

I happen to know about E. Timor. Was offered a war correspondent job there working with a French combat photographer. I met Paul right after he escaped from “beyond Rangoon.” He went out the back Jack shortly before the henchmen arrived. He had been taking photos of things the regime did not want in the news. I declined the job as it was “no weapons to be carried.” I had intel that the Indo regime had captured and disappeared 17 Western writers the year before and I wanted to bring a few guns with me.

Anyone who enjoys, or is even interested, in witnessing the horrific abuse and pain, inflicted on other human beings is a monster.
What’s happened to the world? How did we get to this point? This cannot be the 21st century. This is a nightmare from the annals of, “Days of Darkness, Days of Doom, Hopelessness in the Human Condition.” Courtesy of 600 AD, give or take.

Bring back public hangings in America, at least for muslim terrorists, they used to be well attended public events, with today’s entertainment marketing, they could be again.

Reminded me of how public hangings used to draw large crowds in England, and how pickpockets would work the crowd, even as their fellow pickpockets were being hung 🙂
