Russia appears to deploy forces in Egypt, eyes on Libya role

This is Obama’s legacy. His precipitous and ill-thought-out withdrawal from Iraq led to the creation of ISIS. His support for the Muslim Brotherhood destabilized Egypt, leading to the downfall of Mubarak, the short-lived Muslim Brotherhood regime there and the present al-Sisi regime, leading to an Islamic reaction that allowed ISIS to gain strength in the Sinai. His takedown of Gaddafi led to the chaos in Libya. Now Russia is moving in. It would never have contemplated doing so were it not for the drastic weakening of America that Obama brought about.

“Exclusive: Russia appears to deploy forces in Egypt, eyes on Libya role – sources,” by Phil Stewart, Idrees Ali and Lin Noueihed, Reuters, March 14, 2017:

(Reuters) – Russia appears to have deployed special forces to an airbase in western Egypt near the border with Libya in recent days, U.S., Egyptian and diplomatic sources say, a move that would add to U.S. concerns about Moscow’s deepening role in Libya.

The U.S. and diplomatic officials said any such Russian deployment might be part of a bid to support Libyan military commander Khalifa Haftar, who suffered a setback with an attack on March 3 by the Benghazi Defence Brigades (BDB) on oil ports controlled by his forces.

The U.S. officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the United States has observed what appeared to be Russian special operations forces and drones at Sidi Barrani, about 60 miles (100 km) from the Egypt-Libya border.

Egyptian security sources offered more detail, describing a 22-member Russian special forces unit, but declined to discuss its mission. They added that Russia also used another Egyptian base farther east in Marsa Matrouh in early February.

The apparent Russian deployments have not been previously reported.

The Russian defense ministry did not immediately provide comment on Monday and Egypt denied the presence of any Russian contingent on its soil.

“There is no foreign soldier from any foreign country on Egyptian soil. This is a matter of sovereignty,” Egyptian army spokesman Tamer al-Rifai said.

The U.S. military declined comment. U.S. intelligence on Russian military activities is often complicated by its use of contractors or forces without uniforms, officials say.

Russian military aircraft flew about six military units to Marsa Matrouh before the aircraft continued to Libya about 10 days later, the Egyptian sources said.

Reuters could not independently verify any presence of Russian special forces and drones or military aircraft in Egypt….

The top U.S. military commander overseeing troops in Africa, Marine General Thomas Waldhauser, told the U.S. Senate last week that Russia was trying to exert influence in Libya to strengthen its leverage over whoever ultimately holds power.

“They’re working to influence that,” Waldhauser told the Senate Armed Services Committee on Thursday.

Asked whether it was in the U.S. interest to let that happen, Waldhauser said: “It is not.”

One U.S. intelligence official said Russia’s aim in Libya appeared to be an effort to “regain a toe-hold where the Soviet Union once had an ally in Gaddafi.”

“At the same time, as in Syria, they appear to be trying to limit their military involvement and apply enough to force some resolution but not enough to leave them owning the problem,” the official added, speaking on the condition of anonymity.

Russia’s courting of Haftar, who tends to brand his armed rivals as Islamist extremists and who some Libyans see as the strongman their country needs after years of instability, has prompted others to draw parallels with Syria, another longtime Soviet client.

Asked by U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham whether Russia was trying to do in Libya what it did in Syria, Waldhauser said: “Yes, that’s a good way to characterize it.”

A Western diplomat, speaking on condition of anonymity, said Russia was looking to back Haftar, although its initial focus would likely be on Libya’s “oil crescent.”

“It is pretty clear the Egyptians are facilitating Russian engagement in Libya by allowing them to use these bases. There are supposedly training exercises taking place there at present,” the diplomat said.

Egypt has been trying to persuade the Russians to resume flights to Egypt, which have been suspended since a Russian plane carrying 224 people from the Red Sea resort of Sharm al-Sheikh to St Petersburg was brought down by a bomb in October 2015. The attack was claimed by an Islamic State branch that operates out of northern Sinai.

Russia says that its primary objective in the Middle East is to contain the spread of violent Islamist groups….

I used to worry about things like that. Now I think we will be lucky to survive the onslaught of the left & Islamists against the homeland.

Obama did what he did on purpose. It weakened our position in the World and our Military all at the same time. That is what he and all his fellow leftist wanted.

There was a time when I thought America was always right- especially when using the Military. Unfortunately, in the past 20 years our use of the Military has either not resulted in the desired outcome or we supported the wrong side. Take Kosovo- we were told that Serbs had murdered 400,000 Muslims and committed other atrocities to justify a 78 day bombardment killing thousands of Serbs. After the farce, it turned out about 4,000 Muslims had been killed and at least that many Serbs were killed by Muslim militias. Kosovo has now become an Islamic province with most Serbs driven out and no one in our ruling class seems to be at all concerned.
Regarding Iraq were we were told the Iraqis longed for freedom and Saddam was the most brutal tyrant in history. As it turned out, Saddam protected the Christian minority and likely the people he was executing were some of the same terrorists our military had to deal with. Then we destabilized Libya, then Syria. Heck- going back to the early 90s, we destabilized South Africa. Johannesburg was a very modern and safe city until the United States intervened- now it’s one of the most dangerous cities on the planet. Anyway, we certainly need to question anything our current ruling class may be doing to other nations and I don’t think Russia is always wrong.

Well Said. What we have to do now is see if Trump is going to change things or not. I pray that he does indeed.

What you are seeing is the world as a board game for the superpowers. Perhaps you have seen the Chinese game called “Go”. There is a board where opposing players place these black or white stones on the board and try to surround pieces of territory. He who succeeds in grabbing the most territory wins the game.

Going back half a century or more, the USA has been involved in this game with the former Soviet Empire. The world is their board. Serbia, Syria and Saddam Hussein were occupied by the Soviet’s black stones and the USA placed their white stones to surround these territories. When the Soviets moved into Afghanistan with their black pieces, the USA sent in the Mujahidin white pieces to take that territory away from the Russians. The USA funded ISIS to go against the old Soviet base Syria. The USA also enabled ISIS to go against the old Soviet alli Gadaffi. All in all, the USA has done more to spread Islamic extremism around this world than anybody. No wonder Obama and presidents before him loved the ever so manipulable Muslims.

On to this very day the game continues, with both these countries destroying pieces of the board as they play out their mindless game. Neither side gives a damn about the people on these pieces of territory they fight over.

Well said. Clinton made a total mess over Kosovo and brought about a Muslim nation in eastern Europe. Canadian Major-General Lewis MacKenzie, at one time in charge of all UN forces in the Balkans and for a Canadian a very independent-minded and good man, openly stated that UN forces never found evidence of genocide in Kosovo and that the Muslim Kosovo Albanians had successfully deceived Bill Clinton into disgracefully attacking Serbia. I spent a few years in Johannesburg so can testify that once it was quite safe, at night safely wandered all over Hillbrow, but today would almost certainly end up dead, but the world and America wanted black majority rule, so created a mess. I wanted a more just system, but my problem was one of knowing that black Africa cannot run a booze party in a well-stocked brewery. Now it has a mess.
That said, in my opinion, other than with special forces America no longer knows how to fight it’s way out of a wet paper bag. Politicians not the military ultimately run the military. Consider this difference. In 2015 the Nigerian leader invited into Nigeria South African mercenaries to fight Boko Haram that for 6 years the Nigerian Army had failed to bring to heel. In 3 1/2 months those mercenaries achieved what the entire Nigerian army had failed to do in 6 years. Many of them had fought the communists in Angola for years and were battle hardened – and ruthless. They don’t mess around and took no Boko Haram prisoners. That is how you fight Islam. You wipe out the bastards, not capture and put them on Guantanamo. You don’t need Guantanamo and no sane army takes ISIS savages prisoner. After all their obscene cruelty against Christians in particular, rape of women, crucifying Christians but also murdering and treating Yazidis with shocking cruelty, they are contaminated for life, so you kill them and don’t waste taxpayer money.

Islamic theology is the problem. Islam theology creates a warring, dysfunctional society.

Why worry about the Russians in Egypt or Libya? The only long term outcome is a loss of Russian money and blood. The jihadis will eventually run them out, just like in Afghanistan.

The non-Muslims world needs to admit Islamic theology is the problem. Then devise a program to force an Islamic reformation.

Here is a portion of my “RICO M3” plan. It can be used in the USA to start an Islamic reformation.
(Read it all at: http://rico-m3.blogspot.com/)

American RICO statutes (Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations) were intended to go after the mafia. The acts of Islamic mullahs and jihadis clearly falls into the same pattern as the mafia. The only difference being, Islam’s claim of an oddball form of “religious legitimacy”.

The US should use the RICO statutes to, declare Islam, a criminal enterprise. Then close Islam down as it presently exists in the US.

RICO allows the government to follow crime and money. Then, arrest all, and confiscate anything in its path.

You can be sure the movement of money for jihad is widespread. You can be sure the incitement and communication between mullahs and mosques is wide spread. You can also be sure there is foreign involvement. The RICO statutes were made just for this type of activity.

Use a small army of CPAs and attorneys to investigate every jihad attack. Follow 100% of the money back to its source. Track anyone involved, in any way. Then use the RICO statutes to jail, confiscated, and shut down all involved. That includes:

M1 – Shutting down any and all mosques involved in any jihad attack.

M2 – Arrest any and all mullahs involved.

M3 – Follow, and confiscate, any and all jihad money back to its source.

This should show the abject failure of Obhammud’s failed policies, foreign and domestic. We toppled Sadam Hussein and replaced him then neglect followed, a case of Bush winning the war and Obhammud losing the peace. Hillary personally ordered and oversaw the toppling of Qadafi in Libya and replacing him with chaos. We toppled longtime ally Mubarak in Egypt in favor of the hostile Muslime Brotherhood. We ran the Taliban out of Afghanistan and Obhammud moved us out and let ISIS move right in unopposed. Then there is the domestic scene. I think I’m going to be sick.
