At a Free-Speech Event, UCLA Bans Book About Jihadists

103

This is sharia in America.

Further proof of the islamization of America and the continuing imposition of sharia restrictions on our freedoms.

UCLA banned my book on Islam from a free speech event

By Elan Journo, The Hill,  02/11/17:

At UCLA Law School last week, a squad of student “thought police” tried to ban my book, Failing to Confront Islamic Totalitarianism: From George W. Bush to Barack Obama and Beyond. They don’t want you to know the book even exists, let alone what’s inside it. And the UCLA administration enabled them. This ominous episode underlines how students are learning to be contemptuous of intellectual freedom.

The story of what happened at UCLA is laced with ironies. On Feb. 1, the UCLA chapter of the Federalist Society and the Ayn Rand Institute co-sponsored a panel discussion at UCLA Law School on the vital importance of freedom of speech and the threats to it. My book shows how certain philosophic ideas undercut America’s response to the jihadist movement, including notably its attacks on freedom of speech.

Naturally, the book was displayed and offered for sale at a reception prior to the event, which featured Dave Rubin, the contrarian YouTube host; Flemming Rose, the Danish editor who published the now-infamous Mohammad cartoons in 2005 and author of The Tyranny of Silence; and Steve Simpson, editor of Defending Free Speech (these two books were also displayed).

During the reception, however, a group of UCLA students assembled in front of the book table and objected to mine. Why? Had they read the book, weighed the evidence, and found it lacking? Had they formed a considered evaluation of the book’s argument?

No: They felt the book was “offensive” and “insulting.” They had “issues” with the views that I and my co-author, Onkar Ghate, put forward. Our views, it seems, were “Islamophobic.” Based on what? Apparently, for some of them, it was the book’s title.

Yet another irony here is that in the book we disentangle the notion of “Islamophobia.” We show that it’s an illegitimate term, one that clouds thinking, because it mashes together at least two fundamentally different things. The term blends, on the one hand, serious analysis and critique of the ideas of Islamic totalitarianism, the cause animating the jihadists, which is vitally important (and the purpose of my book); and, on the other hand, racist and tribalist bigotry against people who espouse the religion of Islam. Obviously, racism and bigotry have no place in a civilized society.

Moreover, the book makes clear that while all jihadists are self-identified Muslims, it is blatantly false that all Muslims are jihadists. (It should go without saying, though sadly it must be said, that countless Muslims are law abiding, peaceful, productive Americans.) Ignorant of the book’s full scope and substance, the students felt it had no place on campus.

The students demanded that my book be removed from display. My colleagues who manned the display table declined to remove the book.

So the students enforced their own brand of thought control. They turned their backs to the table, forming a blockade around it, so no one could see or buy the books. Then they started aggressively leaning back on the table, pushing against the book displays. By blocking access to the book, they were essentially trying to ban it.

At this point, you might hope the UCLA administration would step in to re-assert the principle of intellectual freedom that is so crucial to education, a free society, and the advancement of human knowledge. Finally a rep from UCLA did step in–to abet the student protestors. My book was “inflammatory.” It had to go.

Thus: at a panel about freedom of speech and growing threats to it – not least from Islamists – UCLA students and school administrators tried to ban a book that highlights the importance of free speech, the persistent failure to confront Islamic totalitarianism, and that movement’s global assaults on free speech.

This shameful incident reflects a wider phenomenon on American campuses. At university, students should learn to think, to engage with different views, and thus to grow intellectually. But increasingly, students learn to put their feelings above facts. Some students demand to be protected from what they merely believe, without evidence, are uncongenial views. They demand that non-orthodox views be silenced. And such universities as UCLA willingly coddle and appease them.

The universities, observes Steve Simpson in Defending Free Speech, are a bellwether of the future of freedom of speech. If today’s students are increasingly hostile to intellectual freedom, can we really expect tomorrow’s voters, lawyers, judges, politicians to uphold free speech? To champion that principle, you have to value dialogue, knowledge, and, ultimately, the reasoning mind. Yet reason is precisely what those student agitators subordinated to their emotions.

      • JacksonPearson

It’s very apparent that NONE of these students did any research on Islam, the Qur’an, hadiths, or sunnahs to know what they’re talking about. It’s been estimated that since it’s creation, Islam have slaughtered 270 million of the earth’s population, and counting. Religions don’t kill like this.

True, but America used to be a light of decency and fair play, the democrats acting on instructionsfrom their muslim masters have dimmed that bulb.

      EXACTLY!!!!!!!

  • Dean

The regressive left has never honored the definition of words or their concepts, so I have never taken anything they say seriously except in the context of their special interests. And we can start with and always include the only objectively conceived rights, the individual rights like those of the Constitution and individual freedom. Gradually our entire language has become weaponized to advance the special and oppressive interests of the totalitarian left.

What is going on in your schools, colleges, Universities?

Join us on February 17th, 2017 in Rochester, NY and around Monroe County for a day of understanding and affirmation of Black lives in our schools. This day and event is made possible by the collaboration of educators, parents, community members, and BLM local activists.

Diverse community partners will come together to create a day of education, dialogue and action that will actively engage a significant number of educational communities throughout Monroe County in activities that support understanding and affirming Black Lives Matter.

    • Jim Fox

BLM is becoming analogous with SPLC & BDS as supporters of Islam and suppression of free speech. So go to hell.

      • J Butterfield

Simple query on the dreadful state within your schools. Why that merits “go to hell” I do not know?

        • Jim Fox

These groups exist independently of schools; that their racist hate is being taught in schools [NOT ‘my schools’, where do you get that?] makes it worse. They are detestable and can GTH, is my opinion. SO what?

          • J Butterfield

It seemed that when I complained about shocking events in your (U.S.) schools you told me to go to hell. Your schools clearly means schools in the U.S. I did not suggest that you own a school. If you think black racists should go to hell, that would be ideal.

        • Jim Fox

I meant to say those institutions can ‘go to hell’…

    • Tm.

Sir/madam: all lives matter. All lives matter. There are good people, there are bad people. There are people who work hard, try to live right, try to be a positive force in the community. There are people who for a variety of reasons do not live right. Some are bad, some had no chance due to drug addicted parents, and some are evil. If we live right, most times we will be fairly okay. If we choose a life of crime, then anything can happen.
The schools are there. If God gave people a brain and working limbs then let them use those gifts to the best of their abilities. I don’t think there will be any problems.

    • Mahou Shoujo

When blacks start acting like all lives matter, they will be listened to, as they are promoting bigotry and hatred of non blacks. Fervent wishes for colossal failure.

      • J Butterfield

They are promoting bigotry and hatred. I asked why should your schools be promoting this rabble. My mistake to think anyone would be concerned. It seems they are only concerned that I should go to hell or have a colossal failure.

        • Mahou Shoujo

Point to be made – All lives matter. There is no one that does not matter unless they wilfully exclude themselves. Why are schools banning books, censoring opinions stopping people from speaking? The failure of the education system is in the gutter, it has to be pulled out, not ground in. Education only should be teaching kids about colour in kindergarten where the they use a lot of crayons.

          • Craig

Don’t take the comments so seriously. You’ll get an ulcer.

      • Steve

Look at e. cummings and how he is being an obstructionist to trump’s plans to try to help blacks – and others – in the city. Its an orchestrated do nothing and later blame game. I guess he feels those blm don’t matter.

    • JacksonPearson

Black Lives Matters are cop killers, looters, burners, and terrorists. I hope DHS calls them out and labels them as such.

    • ClarionVoice

Our Universities certainly have become a breeding ground for hate and discontent, aka “Activism”, of late. That “grand old tradition of Protest” in America has, like many other Citizen levers on Government, been subsumed into a layer of Advocacy Organizations (Section 527s) which now drives the Citizen. For an Advocacy Organization, getting established in any center for education means growth and growth is oh so very important. A large Organization will be able to rally more support and gain the ability to then support causes which the Administrators of the Organization deem to be a priority.

I think this is where the problem occurs. The Citizen may end up supporting a cause they may not have intended to support, in a fashion similar to a Citizen’s diminished control over Government, the further removed they become.

In the hierarchy of Organizations a Smaller Organization will often allow itself to be co opted, similarly to a corporate merger. What now exists are two Organizations, the smaller one located below the other in hierarchy. The Citizen is still supporting the Lower Organization, yet the Higher Organization is now deciding which causes to deem a priority. This co opting grows and morphs as more and more Organization are acquired. International interests may now be joined. Interests seeking to codify themselves in the Government may be joined. The smaller Organization’s name, usually a vaguely descriptive mission statement of some sort, remains the same. The Citizen may notice some changes in activities, but generally believes they are supporting their Organization’s original vision. So we end up with “Vegetarian Cat Lovers” associating with and acting all intimidating with “Black Bloc, ANTIFA” rioters at CS Berkeley.

  • Dr. Doomsday

Gee, UCLA, why don’t you just put them in a pile, and throw some gas on it and light it up?

Instead of the “Night of the long knives” or “Kristallnacht” they are having “Night of the Dhimmi Pacifiers” and “Safe Space Nacht.”

    Damned hypocrite, brown shirt, losers!

    • nineleven

lenin would be proud of these useful idiots… We will need a reverse-gramsci version of the “long march back” for the next 30 years to remove the destruction that has occured by the uncontrolled leftists in power all over the nations’ institutions. Folks, how do we this?

      • Craig

How do we do this? You will not be able to do anything, because EVERYONE is a slave to TV and social media. You must wait until the socialist anti-Americans start the next civil war, then wreak your wrath on them. These same “colleges and universities” (actually anti-American indoctrination centers) are now training their students in combat techniques and are calling for armed revolt against Trump voters. They demand their communist America.
        Talk about your “useful idiots”.

        • wilypagan

Well, since the military and police and much of the armed militia/general population adore Trump, I doubt that little putsch is going to get very far.

        • Mark Steiner

Mark Levin had quite a session concerning “tenured professors” and the swill emanating daily from the podium – last night February 16. Also, though some of us already new about higher indoctrination, there are a few voices amplifying the details. Not enoug voices, though.

        • Laurence Almand

Read the excellent book BRAINWASHED to find out how the Communists are programming our college students. Also study THE LANGUAGE POLICE.

          • Dorrie

There are several books like that because it’s been happening since the early 60’s. Implanting our youth with the idea of “free love,” smoking dope, wearing strange clothes, etc., was all a part of it. And the ones who were “hippies” back then, went on to teach our youth of the same “values.” Obama’s good pal, Bill Ayers is a prime example. He was a home-grown terrorist, and now he’s a college professor, continuing his totalitarianism and destruction.

          • Craig

Like I said before, after the shooting at Kent State, there were communist pamphlets and books of Mao all over the place. Same with the Watts riots. The communists were a little more discreet over the years, but as the U.S. becomes infiltrated with socialist illegal aliens, communist-indoctrinated multiple generations and socialist and communist presidential candidates, they are throwing caution to the wind and going straight for the throat of Constitution-loving Americans.

          • Dorrie

You’re absolutely right, Craig. My cousin was a cop when Watts happened and he was knifed. It is my firm belief that rioters should be arrested and imprisoned. A lawful protest is one thing, rioting is quite another.

          • aebe

Yup . Friend of mine’s father was LAPD , the man wouldn’t talk about the riots , or Korea .
Rioters shot , looters hung . Instead of giving them safe spaces , as in Baltimore or Ferguson .

        • Steve

It would be interesting to see what happens with the department of education. It might be a good plan to dissolve most of it and leave it up to states and encourage home schooling with “testing” and certification etc by testing sites.

    • Drew the Infidel

Agreed. They bought “Mein Kampf” for all the wrong reasons.

    • Marcus Del Cactus

True that, however “Kristallnacht” literally means “Night of Crystal,” or the “Night of Broken Glass” as sparked by the riots against the Jews throughout Nazi Germany where they went around destroying Jewish buildings, like socialist liberals/ANTIFA do today to property. Nazis were also socialist fascists of course.

  • Tm.

This is incredible. Is it legal? How can we expect voters, politicians, lawyers, judges to
uphold free speech? You protest at universities like the left does. Demand equal rights and equal protection. You educate your children. You provide scholarships for promising students in the field of law. You support the building of conservative schools and their teachers. You resist. You protest tit for tat. Every protest by the left, there should be a protest by the right. You buy mainstream media outlets. The left has done it. There must be some conservative billionaires.
I can’t believe this. Free speech was just shot down. No difference than a CH attack.

  • Mahou Shoujo

Will the federal government de-fund these bigots who oppress free speech in order to promote their hate literature?

    • JacksonPearson

It’s OK as long the oppressors Nazis are the only people talking. /S

      • Craig

It’s OK as long as it is the “free speech” the fascist anti-Americans approve of.

    • wilypagan

UC is a seditious organization operating within our midst as is most of the California government from Brown on down. If they try that sanctuary BS, violating our constitutional rights and rioting, AG Sessions should come down hard.

      • Mahou Shoujo

Hopefully all federal funding will be removed from cities that refuse to obey the law, martial law is not out of the question as “plan B”.

        • Dorrie

Martial Law would be the end of this country. Trump MUST get control of deep state and jail them!

          • IzlamIsTyranny

What if your choice of government comes down to an islamic “republic” or a secular dictatorship?
The US federal, state and local governments have been infiltrated, subverted, corrupted, co-opted by muslums across the board and across the country.

        • Steve

Hope it doesn’t get to martial law. I hope the GOP figures out how to shame the obstructionist leftists into taking a back seat and maybe one or two democrats with some sense (if such a thing today is possible) will step up for the country. In any case, the democrats face 2018. They are now a dying party but i’m worried about the hints of “shadow government” like the recent illegal leaks of infor to the media. I think serious house cleaning is in order.

      • Mark Steiner

Have the clowns arrested. You know derned well it it were you and I, we’d end up in the paddy wagon. Equal justice under law … needs to return.

      • santashandler

F**K that sanctuary city garbage. SF and L.A. can have it. There will be problems if they try to make the entire state that way.

    • Steve

Lets hope so. Trump is the boxer in the middle of the ring not on the ropes. Hes pissing off the media which means he is doing damage. I keep looking at him as an example and among other things going back to the liberal sites now and then just to throw a few jabs. They are full of delusions with their playbook of cards.

    • Laurence Almand

California will give them more and more money – which is why the state has such a huge debt, and deficits of more than $2 billion!

      • Mahou Shoujo

California is gong to have to face its state debit eventually, then, it won’t matter what the democrats want, things will be the way bankers say.

  • ClarionVoice

For me this is all so simple. Islam is a political system just like Communism and should be dealt with accordingly! That is – The Government has a perfect right, under the Constitution, to ban and arrest proponents of any system which seeks to dominate or destroy the Government. When they can reform themselves to a point where it is clear they have divorced the politics from their so called “religion” they will have joined with “humanity.”
As for “Free-Speach” on University campuses, ~60 years of Communist subversion has completely removed it, and the pupils are totally unaware. We only know what we “see”.

    • IzlamIsTyranny

When I went to UCLA (may the Bruins lose all their games) there was a Turkish “history” professor who regularly denied the Turkish genocide of 2.5 million Armenian and Assyrian Christians — and neither the “history” department or the administration had any problems w/the fact.

Contemporary USA uni students do not think (perhaps cannot think). They only ‘feel’.

    • Mark Steiner

      Or, become “reactionaries” without thinking.

      Without discernment.

      • Lia

You’ve hit the nail on the head. One can scream and shout and feel. Reason and logic and knowledge, the stuff needed for debate, are quite different.

  • Steve

When i was a kid at school i was blamed for things bullies did but i fought back. I got kicked out of school due to poor administration not understanding what was going on. But the next school i went to my attitude had changed and i didn’t cower to bullies from the outset and drew the line. If you start by giving in to bullying behavior its hard to turn it around.

Is Cancer a Phobia?. Is Ebola a phobia? Is Heart Disease a phobia? No they are not a phobia as they are based on proven and known facts of life and death. Similarly Is Islam a phobia? No it is not a phobia it is a known dread disease and needs to be feared and fought against. There is no such thing as Islamophobia. All it is a a’politically correct’ covering for a weapon of mass destruction. If Islam was and is a phobia there would be no terrorists.

The liberal cancer quest in higher learning has taken over free speech. It was done slow via brainwashing college dummies and now look at the work that Trump has to do in reversing 8 years of evil. The storm is brewing by the evil scumbag Muslim himself. Sadly, it also must be said that millions of American and other Western Muslims are either unwitting or unconcerned co-conspirators of the jihadists, because they contribute money to mosques that then launder the funds to foreign and domestic terrorist organizations and their political front groups. Enabling with one’s eyes closed is still enabling.

These are the leftists that are no longer true liberals in the vein of kennedy days but, either through misinformation, poor critical thinking, or being hijacked by thugs and secret funding, have become a threat willingly or indirectly to America. Operating through institutions of government, media, acadumbia, and blogs, etc. they are a subversive dangerous movement that has been insidiously growing for years. Of course as some have mentioned there are forces behind it out but day to day interactions must be dealt with by Trump and the GOP and those like-minded. Trump and his cabinet will have to truly be careful with this new party and its associations. Recently we have been seeing events that hint of a “shadow government” operating – such as illegal wire tapped info leaked to the media that whips it up into a batch of fake news. Trump is continuously bombarded by fake media and obstructionists throughout our government. Its like a real-life suspense thriller each day and it will pay for true Americans to stand strong.

Most nazis were “peaceful and law abiding” that didn’t make them good people.

  • This is an alarming expression of the tyranny of the Left and the colluding administrators at UCLA. First, UCLA should be defunded immediately – NO American tax dollars until it upholds the American Constitution and its protection of free speech. The odious indoctrination of students and the illegal stifling of free speech are serious threats to freedom in America. Hitler censored books by burning them in the 30’s – on campuses it was called “synchronizing the literary community.” Today it is the Leftists and Islamists who are banning books. The language of the Left and the language of Islamists (taqiyyah) is Doublespeak – the language of opposites. It is the Left that imposes the thought police who want to criminalize criticism of Islam and ban books – not Donald Trump. This is an information/disinformation war and it is the Left that behaves like Hitler even though they accuse Donald Trump – it is Doublespeak.

A supposed higher learning institution bans higher learning ??? What kind of B.S. is that ? These liberals in the supposed education system are no different than the Nazi’s were, they need to control everything the children and student get to see, hear, and learn. If anything goes against the lunacy of liberalism, the try to make sure they don’t read it, see it, or hear it. Pure insanity form the liberal in education, and they knew years ago that there was no better way to indoctrinated people to the lunacy of liberalism, than to hijack their minds as children in the education system, and indoctrinate them toward the lunacy of liberalism.

Free speech for me, but not for thee. F#(k UCLA.

Yes, folks, those UCLA students are in full indoctrination mode. This generation of college students no longer have the capacity for free thought, or to accept that others do. No, they no longer care about any of that. It’s all about ‘feelings’ now. ‘It offends.’ ‘They are not comfortable with it, they need safe space’ etc. Intolerance to anyone who expresses anything other than the party thought. All under the guise of ‘diversity, multi-culturalism, etc.’ What insanity. If Hitler were around today, he’d see that his ideas and twisted agendas had a much greater impact than he could ever have imagined.
