Slams Israeli Government, compares top official to TrumpPHILADELPHIA—A Democratic member of the House Armed Services Committee compared Jewish Israeli settlers to termites on Monday while speaking at an event sponsored by an anti-Israel organization that supports boycotts of the Jewish state.
Rep. Hank Johnson (D., Ga.) launched into a tirade against Israel and its policies toward the Palestinians, comparing Jewish people who live in disputed territories to “termites” that destroy homes. Johnson also compared Israeli Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman to Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump, a remark that drew vocal agreement from those in the room.
“There has been a steady [stream], almost like termites can get into a residence and eat before you know that you’ve been eaten up and you fall in on yourself, there has been settlement activity that has marched forward with impunity and at an ever increasing rate to the point where it has become alarming,” Johnson said during an event sponsored by the U.S. Campaign to End the Israeli Occupation, an anti-Israel organization that galvanizes supporters of the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions movement, or BDS.
“It has come to the point that occupation, with highways that cut through Palestinian land, with walls that go up, with the inability or the restriction, with the illegality of Palestinians being able to travel on those roads and those roads cutting off Palestinian neighborhoods from each other,” Johnson continued. “And then with the building of walls and the building of check points that restrict movement of Palestinians. We’ve gotten to the point where the thought of a Palestinian homeland gets further and further removed from reality.”Johnson, who in 2010 voiced his fears that Guam would tip over and capsize if too many people resided on the island, said that “Jewish people” routinely steal land and property from Palestinians.
“You see one home after another being appropriated by Jewish people who come in to claim that land just because somebody did not spend the night there,” he said, referring to claims that Israeli settlers plot to seize Palestinian land. ‘“The home their [Palestinian] ancestors lived in for generations becomes an Israeli home and a flag goes up,” he said, adding, “the Palestinians are barred from flying flags in their own neighborhoods.”
Johnson went on to compare Lieberman to Trump as he lashed out against the Israeli government.
“The fact is the Israeli government, which is the most right-wing government ever to exist in the state of Israel in its history, the most right wing government, you got a guy like Trump who is now the minister of defense in Israel calling the shots on defense,” he said, adding that he is not the only member of Congress who holds these views.
James Zogby, a member of the Democratic platform committee and president of the Arab American Institute, informed the crowd that efforts to make the Democratic platform more pro-Palestinian ran up against objections from those who are scared of casino magnate and Republican donor Sheldon Adelson.
“I had no idea the [platform] fight would be over ‘occupation’ and ‘settlements,’” Zogby said, referring to efforts by more mainstream elements of the Democratic Party to ensure the platform language remained staunchly pro-Israel.
“
“Something happens in this game where they [Democratic Party members] take their policy brain out and put it somewhere and they substitute their politics brain, which they think is a smart brain,” Zogby said, summarizing this thought process as: “We can’t do it because Sheldon Adelson will come out against us.”
“Jesus,” Zogby said, “he’s gonna come out against you no matter what!”

Because the are strong supporters of Israel, and both religions, Christianity and Judaism, left the last empire religion of antiquity (Islam) in the dust centuries ago. Hinduism, and Buddhists also have long achieved a respect for individual choice and excepted the idea of separating religion and state.

Johnson was on such a progressive rant he did not take time to examine facts. Fact is, modern Israel is fairly progressive – not all that conservative. The government is coalition, meaning compromise must take place for all sides to move forward on issues. Gay rights are encouraged. Israeli liberals believe a Two State solution will bring peace.
This so-called congressman should be run out of Dodge come election time because he has few – it any – clues about what he is ranting about.

I have never liked using the terms liberal or progressive as undiscerning folks may be misled. However what you have very well described is what I like to label as reprobate. I didn’t make that up; the word is ancient, and is found in the Bible (Paul’s epistles). Basically it is a mindset wherein what is truly good becomes evil, and what is truly evil becomes good. It got a bit complicated, but you got the message and I know it is fact. I once watched a video of then Harlem-based black reverend Dr James Manning talking about black racism. Manning was astoundingly honest and brave, stating that to his black congregation that black folk are the worst racists of all. After watching the glaring racism following Travon Martin’s death and the total silence from black people and Obama after Shawn Tyson murdered in Florida two white British tourists ‘because they were white’, the realization really hit home that racism is not confined to any one race.

Over many years I’ve heard black Americans say the most disgracefully racist things about white people, but among liberal whites it seems fashionable not to accuse those blacks of racism -while themselves supporting accusations of white racism! Whites need to get over the slavery guilt trip. Abraham Lincoln went to war to get rid of the scourge of slavery and hundreds of thousands died in this endeavour.
ln ignorance, most black people don’t seem to know that long before whites got into the slavery business, Africans enslaved those of their race who they had captured in inter-tribal wars and Muslims Arabs were captured and enslaving black Africans. I long ago saw an old painting, a tragic scene of a long line of chained Africans being marched across part of the Sahara desert into slavery. I believe that in all the Arab Muslims enslaved about 9.3 million black Africans, and, as you stated, Muslim enslaving continues. Both the Arab and Ottoman Muslims enslaved thousands of European, the Barbary Corsairs even enslaving Americans captured on American ships captured in the Mediterranean Sea. Some, or all, were freed after Thomas Jefferson formed a navy and created the U.S. Marine Corps to go to Tripoli where they beat up the Muslims. That was the Muslim contribution to the formation of the United States!

The Berbers were an interesting case. They fought off and for about 20 years stopped the Muslim Arab invasion of North Africa while under the rulership of a Jewish princess, Kahina. Possibly at that time they followed Judaism. No one seems certain. The Berbers eventually succumbed to sheer weight of Muslim numbers, but today, more and more, many are discovering their Berber history and realizing that they are not Arabs.

I assume that this congressman made no mention of the so-called Palestinian belief system within Islam that calls for the death and destruction of everything Jewish. If he, and those who think like him, had half a brain that would enable them to think reasonably, they might be able to conclude that these two peoples simply cannot live in the same community, and that a defensible border and separation is required of these societies. Since I do not see these two people as ever living side by side in mutual respect and harmony, I can only hope that politicians like him and his kind are voted out of office, substituting only those who can see reality.

The idea that Israel must exist for the apocalypse to happen and Jesus to come back is a fundamental part of the most popular version of Protestant Christian eschatology in America (the whole rapture, tribulation, etc. story). It’s the view of John Hagee among many, many others. Hagee is one of the most popular evangelical leaders in the country and the head of the largest Christian pro-Israel group in the country. And I don’t see how anyone could debate that anyone who hasn’t accepted Christ as their savior is going to spend eternity in hell according to any sort of traditional Christianity. So that necessarily includes all Jews going to hell (of course I’m talking about people that are religiously Jewish here, not ethnically Jewish, some of whom could be Christians too). I know there are many other Christian views on these matters and not all Christians believe this, but in my experience these are the views of most Christians that identify as rightwing and evangelical.
