“Cosmo Goes Sharia,” By Pamela Geller, Breitbart, October 28, 2015
Story continues below advertisementCosmopolitan magazine last week published an interview with Brooke Sever, who is identified as “the editor-in-chief of Cosmopolitan Middle East, which predominantly sells in Dubai, as well as in Beirut in Lebanon.” Says Sever: “As soon as you say you’re the editor of Cosmo in the Middle East, people just suddenly have this confused expression on their face and have a million questions.”
Cosmo claims that in the interview, Sever “explains of the complexities of publishing her magazine each month,” but in fact she explains nothing: the entire interview is all about how sharia restricts women’s rights, yet shows the lengths to which Sever and Cosmo will go to obscure what the root cause of those restrictions are.
The interview with Sever reveals almost as much by what she doesn’t say as by what she does. Cosmo is a women’s fashion magazine. Cosmopolitan Middle East should have at least something to say about the hijab, niqab, and burqa – yet Sever has nothing to say about any of them, despite the fact that there is no greater article of hate and misogyny than the burqa. It is the most tangible anti-women symbol known to the world.
Why is it that? Because of what it covers up. Woman. This is Cosmo: its raison d’etre is the allure and sexuality of woman — the very thing sharia means to extinguish – and in Cosmopolitan Middle East, Sever and the other editors of Cosmo are adhering to that.
This entire article laments and bemoans the prohibitions on what they can and cannot publish, yet neither Sever, nor Cosmo’s interviewer, Tess Koman, ever mentions the reason why. Their silence about this no doubt stems from the fact that sharia forbids criticism of sharia – on pain of death. Sever and Koman adhere to this code even as they lament its restrictions.
Sever worries that something she publishes can land her in jail. Under what law? Here again, she never says, and here again, it’s under sharia law.
Sever had a real opportunity to explain to young women the grim reality of sharia oppression of women. But she did nothing. She has an obligation to educate young women on what will be the gravest threat to their freedom in the coming years. But she remained silent.
This unwillingness to confront the problem showed up most vividly when Koman asked, “What kind of political or societal barriers do you run up against?” Sever answered: “We get by on euphemisms. It’s all about getting creative with language.” If she spoke about such issues at all, she might use euphemisms for gender apartheid, creed apartheid, female genital mutilation, and the like. But she doesn’t speak about such matters at all. She is conforming to sharia’s speech codes. That’s not “creative”; that’s submissive and conquered.
Sever also admits that they cannot run a model wearing a cross. Why not? She doesn’t say, but lists a number of sharia restrictions:
We cannot publish images of alcohol, we can’t show pictures of things like, if a model was wearing a necklace with a cross on it, a Christian cross, we couldn’t run that. We can’t refer to Cosmo as a Bible, as Cosmo would be referred to in the U.S. You know, it’s a twentysomething girl’s Bible — not in the Middle East, because you can’t say that. And even down to how much skin we can display. We have to do quite a bit of retouching to flatten boobs, lift up skirts so that midriff is reduced, bring down kind of high-cut underwear so, you know, underbum doesn’t show. We get pretty pervy with some of the pictures that we run because we have to look really, really closely to make sure that there is nothing too offensive. From a guy perspective, we are completely OK to run a completely topless man. There is no problem with that. But you know, heaven forbid we show a shadow of a cleavage. It’s pretty tough.
So when the magazine that epitomizes women’s freedom and celebrates her sexuality gets to the Middle East, it freely surrenders and conforms to the most oppressive, anti-women legal and societal code on the face of the earth. You would think that Western women’s magazines might be a bit bold in the face of that oppression, but they are the worst – witness the lengthy, fawning puff piece on the Ground Zero Mosque imam’s wife, Daisy Khan, that ran a few years ago in MORE magazine.
Where are the pieces on brave women who have stood up to sharia oppression? When is Cosmo going to give us an interview with Wafa Sultan? Where is the MORE magazine profile of Ayaan Hirsi Ali or Nonie Darwish? Or Pamela Geller?
Where also are the pieces in Cosmopolitan Middle East that discuss the reality of women under sharia? A jihadi from the United States, Abu-Khalid al-Amriki, recently cautioned women that if they married a jihad warrior, they would be subject to sharia restrictions, including “staying in a room for several months with no contact to the outside world” and “not being able to see the sun.” Why? Because Islamic law mandates that women not venture out of the house without being covered from head to toe, and they can only go out with permission from a male guardian. Al-Amriki’s words serve as a warning to young Muslim and convert women – a warning Brooke Sever should have given.
Brooke Sever and Cosmo have accepted sharia and its restrictions. Yet they make no mention of Islam or sharia in the article. They’ve done all free young women a tremendous disservice. They have disarmed them in the war of ideas.

As young women today are too distracted and engrossed by the latest Kardashian foolishness, they take for granted the freedoms that they have been given by brave women who came before them. They don’t even see it coming. I have seen hijab being called “cool”. There is nothing cool about being demeaned and treated worse than animals. There is nothing cool about a Muslim woman’s life.

Most those Muslim countries are hot as Arizona desert or the deep south in the summer, The burqa is worn in Afghanistan and Pakistan, but not sure if worn much today, as Muslim women seem to be wearing scarfs or capes mostly with exposed full face or a niqab/cloak with openings for eyes worn in Saudi Arabia. A full body cloak with full face exposed is worn in Iran. Some one may have updated info on this if burqa’s are passe, but the Taliban forced women to wear them. Muslim women are definitely missing some brain cells as they enjoy being slaves and go along with genital removal surgery for girls.

In the largest muslim country, Indonesia, muslims women wear modestly, there are a lot of successful professionals and business women. A women was also appointed as a Prime Minister few years ago : Megawati Sukarno Putri..
Islam required muslims a lot of women professionals to attend women related issues such as women Doctors to take care and treat women patients.
In the book on Traditions that affect the health of women and children, which was published by the World Health Organization in 1979 it says:
With regard to the type of female circumcision which involves removal of the prepuce of the clitoris, which is similar to male circumcision, no harmful health effects have been noted.
FGM is NOT an approved practice in Islam
What about female circumcision?
Female circumcision is allowed in Islam and is an even less extensive procedure as compared to male circumcision, because it involves just a small trimming of the clitoral hood (which looks like a rooster’s comb), which is the prepuce or “foreskin” of the clitoris (15) (17). (This procedure is not to be confused with female genital mutilation or FGM, which is a totally different procedure involving the removal of the clitoris or altering of the genitalia and is NOT an approved practice in Islam). Recovery is even quicker and there are hardly any short term or long term complications.
The benefits with references to medical sources (12) may include improved hygiene, reduced UTI incidences and lower infections of the reproductive systems. It will be interesting to know that in Malaysia, where female circumcision is performed extensively by the Malay-Muslim community, the incidence of cervical cancer in Malay women is lowest amongst the 3 major race groups (Indians, Chinese and Malays).
(18)(19) Another study shows that Malay women are at lower risk of orgasmic sexual dysfunction as compared to non-Malays. (20)
The benefit of female circumcision are :
It prevents unpleasant odours which result from foul secretions beneath
the prepuce.
It reduces the incidence of urinary tract infections
It reduces the incidence of infections of the reproductive system.
Impact of circumcisions studied
CHAPS, the Center for HIV and AIDS Prevention Studies, which manages the clinics, continues to study the impact of circumcisions.
CEO Dirk Taljaard said new data suggests circumcision benefits women, too.
“We saw a protective effect for women. If you had women in the community that have only had circumcised partners, the risk was reduced already by 20 percent for 15- to 25-years-old women,” Taljaard said.
Some studies estimate that, in South Africa, for every four circumcisions, one HIV infection is avoided. Since 2007, more than 1.5 million circumcisions have been performed in the country, suggesting close to 400,000 new infections may have been avoided.

Well, well, clearly you think that due to my disdain for the Kardashians I must be ripe for the picking as a potential convert to Islam. While I think the Kardashians are sluts and nit wits, I believe they have the right to conduct their lives as they choose, as do I. Islam imposes its supposed “values” on everyone around them. I’m not interested in preaching to others as I can only walk in my own shoes.
You have picked the wrong target, I am not “soft” for your talks because unlike most people online who have either never met a Muslim, or met one or two, I have lived, worked and traveled in the Middle East, Africa and Asia for the past 23 years with a few intermittent periods in the US. I know whereof I speak.
As for Indonesia, I have spent quite some time there and still do business there, so I know a bit of the political landscape, including knowing some key players personally, so you are not educating me on that front either. As for Ms. Sukarnoputri, let me educate you, as you don’t know what you are talking about. First, she was not the Prime Minister, that position no longer exists in Indonesia, and the last person to hold that position was her father Sukarno back in the sixties. Second, she was never ELECTED, she was the Vice President, and the acting president was removed and she became president. Third, she has lost every attempt she has made at the presidency. Lastly, her involvement in politics in Indonesia is due to the rife corruption and dynastic political traditions, nothing more. Were you including that tidbit to illustrate some kind of women’s rights in Islam? There would be no other reason to include this morsel of useless and incorrect information.
Too bad for you, I am fully educated about Islam, I have seen first hand how they live from their most “developed” countries in the Gulf to some of their lesser developed countries in Africa and Asia. Across the board, whether wealthy or poor, I have found mind numbing ignorance among both men and women. Moreover, the universal level of their hypocrisy is astounding. I am obviously not Muslim, but I don’t drink, because it don’t care for it, not for religious reasons. I have seen more drunk and drug addled Muslims in my life than Christians to be perfectly honest.
As for these British converts, well, all I can say is that they can’t be very intelligent if they need religion to tell them that they don’t have to drink, or be modest, they can just CHOOSE to, no one is stopping them. As for consumerism….ha! Please! If you have seen the way Muslims from royal families blow through money as I have first hand, you would be ashamed to even approach me with your astoundingly tremendous ignorance.
As for this modesty, Muslim women claim…..Wow, I wasn’t going to post this, but what the hell, I am feeling frisky on a Sunday afternoon. Western women may not have yet been informed by their Muslim sisters that the way to preserve their “virginity” for their husband is to only give up their backside (with great frequency and variety, I might add) instead of their vagina. Of course performing fellatio is also not tearing the hymen, so yes, that is also on the menu. You are either clueless or a hypocrite who pretends this doesn’t happen.
You are clearly yet another ignorant Muslim, who has never learned how to question things so that you can discern and analyze things. Well, I agree that the promo for the interview was misleading, promising to tell all about the complexities, but I don’t think the Editor, if she wants to keep her job, is in a position to be at all truthful here though – this is one of those situations that she would have to be an “ex” Editor to come clean about the target market she serves.

They probably wouldn’t even dare to run any street scene photos of Muslim women in many Islamic cities such as Kabul or Cairo back in say 1960. Back then many Muslim women dressed pretty much the same as women in the West. That was before Islam got serious about time travel back to the 7th century.

I was in Turkey, Iran, Afghanistan and Pakistan on my way to India in 1969. Tehran was a modern clean city like most cities in Europe…and Istambul had lots of men grabbing women…while boys in the country side were throwing stones on Kafit buses. Afghanistan was ruled by a secular Muslim and Pakistan was not yet stooped into Taliban and Christian hatred…

What many of us don’t understand or even know is how the women get around all the nonsense. It is outward conformity. They set a date and place for a ladies’ party, put on the burqa and have the male relative take them to the place—where the males have been excluded. They take off their burqas—and they are very fashionably dressed. They eat and they drink and they chatter and they have a fun time. Then, they put on the burqas, call the male relative (usually a younger brother) to pick them up and bring them home. This is the world of Cosmo Middle East. It has little or nothing to do with the real world of hard-working women and mothers. It’s all the glorious elites—same as here in the West.

What ‘ever’ IS the point? Money, prestige per a ME magazine? A ‘mercy mission’ that is not? A rescue of a woman’s mind, that never happens? Sounds like a ‘mission aborted’ each time, a new issue appears. All to say; what is mission of magazine that stands as an insult to Freedom of Speech/Expression – and to women; no matter where they live? Why does Cosmos, willingly accommodate the challenge or rather, insult of being a magazine that serves at least some ‘best interest’ of women – but does not/cannot?
Perhaps ‘some comfort’ in their experiencing the simpatico of sharia, with the Left’s own ‘burqa-mind’, per Left’s own ‘knock-down’ version of Islam’s sharia. . .cultural rules (never-to-be-broken); those anti-freedom and ever-morphing ‘rules of cultural engagement’, that we know as Political Correctness. No doubt, some familiar resonance in this totalitarian MO; and so a bit easier paycheck to be earned? (Does Cosmo have link to the DNC? Clinton Foundation?
