The old testament relates a different relationship between God and man.It is more concerned with God’s relationship with the Jews,the people through whom God planned to bring Grace into the world. The Jews were under the law because they had to be kept suitable for God’s plan. The wars between the Jews and the pagan tribes are relatively savage ,but it is important to remember that they were only for that time and those peoples ,not open ended as in Islam. The old testament is also about preparing the way for Christ. It is also argued that whether these events really happened is not the point,they are shadows of the things to come. Joshua,a name which is the same as Jesus,also saved his people from evil ,and all the evil had to be destroyed to protect the people of God,as later Jesus destroyed the power of evil over His people. Jesus came to fulfill the old Mosaic law,to open a new chapter in God’s relationship with man kind,enter into a new contract. The old and new were rolled up in one ,Christ. When the new comes the old is superseded. In Biblical terms ,the people that were destroyed had brought their fate upon themselves by their atrocious behaviour, and their corroding influence had to be erased. It was a terrible thing in many ways but God would have no pleasure in it. There is a difference in doing something catastrophic which needs to be done,and hating it, and doing that same act and enjoying it.
