8 Reasons Net Neutrality Is a Grave Threat to Your Freedom

63

The number one reason that every American should consider net neutrality a grave threat is that the Muslim Brotherhood Congressman Hakim Muhammad (Keith Ellison) is dancing after hearing that the FCC voted to approve strong net neutrality rules.

“7 Reasons Net Neutrality Is a Threat to Your Freedom,: By Nick Sanchez Friday, 27 Feb 2015
The FCC’s Democrat majority voted on Thursday to fix something that ain’t broken by approving new regulations for the Internet. Republicans are dissenting, darkly suggesting that the new rules in government hands are a threat.

The commission’s chairman, Tom Wheeler, said the new rules will ensure net neutrality by barring Internet service providers like Comcast from charging companies like Netflix for priority data transmission. Considering that ISPs don’t do this, and currently treat all data transmission equally, Rep. Darrell Issa, R-California, accused the FCC of trying to “fix something that is far from broken.”

Story continues below advertisement

Here are 7 reasons why the FCC’s new net neutrality rules could be a threat to your freedom.

1. The FCC’s new rules are a heavy-handed government takeover of the Internet.

Under the new rules, broadband Internet is classified as a public utility for the first time ever. This gives the government wide control of private companies like Comcast, Verizon, and Time Warner Cable, reducing their incentives to invest in their respective networks. Without this investment, broadband technology will develop more slowly, and prices will be higher for consumers.

2. Net neutrality subsidizes large companies like Netflix and Facebook who don’t need it.

In November, it was widely reported that Netflix alone accounts for over 35 percent of all Internet traffic in the US. If broadband providers were able to charge Netflix a small fee for the high volume of data they send, they could pass that money onto consumers in the form of lower monthly bills.

3. The new rules subvert democracy and the will of the people.

CBS News reported that two in three Americans are opposed to the idea of government regulating the Internet. Other polls show that opposition to net neutrality is even higher.

4. The new regulations will stifle free speech.

Lee E. Goodman, former chairman and a current commissioner of the Federal Election Commission, told Newsmax TV that a government takeover of the Internet will chill political speech.

“The government will regulate the content — and specifically the political content — that the American people can both post online to express their own political opinions, and the political content and information that people can access from the Internet,” said Goodman, who was appointed to the FEC in 2013 by President Obama.

5. The rule-making process was corrupted by the White House.

President Obama and White House staffers used backchannel meetings to pressure chairman Wheeler into creating the strongest possible net neutrality rules over the more moderate approach he originally intended. In this way, the White House operated “like a parallel version of the FCC itself,” The Wall Street Journal reported.

6. The commission’s vote wasn’t transparent.

The new set of rules ushered in by Thursday’s 3-2 vote were not provided to the public for comment. Ahead of the vote, one of the agency’s five commissioners, Ajit Pai, tweeted a picture of the 317-page plan that he was barred from showing the public. Even after the vote, the rules will not be published publicly for many days.
Screen Shot 2015-02-28 at 2.29.14 AM

7. The new rules will hurt the right to privacy, and further empower the federal government to spy on its citizens.

After Edward Snowden leaked the NSA’s secret PRISM surveillance program in 2013, it became clear that the federal government is interested in snooping around in the private affairs of its citizens. Now that the federal government controls the web, its ability to spy will only increase.

As if Obama or Ellison know what is in it let alone have any real knowledge of how it will work. Ellison is so embarrassing to the state of Minnesota – along with failed comedian turned career politician Al Franken. Control freaks run amok.

Anytime the government takes over an industry, it is almost always bad, and generally serves to steal freedoms and to stifle free speech. This policy is just one more power grab by the power abusers in Washington, and will damage the general way that the internet operates currently. 317 pages long, this new law (put in place by decree of the emperor in Washington, without Congress) will be one more odious and intrusive takeover of an entire industry.

You obviously missed the “almost” in my comment, Phooks. There are things that the government can do passably well, though I would contend that even programs like Medicare could be done much better by enlisting the input and aid of private industry.

However, look at the disaster that is Obamacare for an accurate view of how badly the government can foul up a working industry. Takeovers such as this are power grabs, plain and simple, and “net neutrality” particulars allow for censorship of content by the government.

Don’t be so naive, believing that an expanding and abusive federal government is anything more than damaging to the rights and pocketbooks of the U.S. public, Phooks. Obama’s clear violation of his Constitutional authority is a scandal and shame, especially to those in Congress that allow such illegal abuses of power.

Obama is ruling, not governing, acting more like a petulant emperor than a sitting President. And all the while, the simple-minded followers out there applaud and pretend that it is a good thing. The delusion will continue until such unlawful powers and oppression are turned on them, as well.

Creating new laws by pretending to simply change regulations is a thinly veiled power grab, and supporters of Obama’s actions deserve every bit of pain that he will inflict on them.

My previous comment stands, Phooks.

Obama has spied on World Leaders like German Chancellor Angela Merkel, United Nations, arresting Vets for negative comments on social media, muzzled Journalist and has constantly proven he is more of a Dictator than our President and Now he has his Digital Army the new Cyber-Security Agency. I do believe Hussein Obama has a very deep dark part of his soul that is a threat to all of US that dare to post any comments against him. Snowden escaped but how many others have not?? How many others will suffer for expressing their rights to Freedom of Speech?? Just ask, Independent film producer David Crowley and his family and Michael Hastings..oops, sorry you can’t they are dead.. Let’s not forget Benghazi and the Navy Seals Team… Communism lives and America is looking more and more like China every day. Censorship is a mighty force against citizens in the Middle-East, China, Russia and Now it is becoming clear citizens of America are equally in danger!

Next week the white haus is passing new laws banning knives and forks.
These dangerous weapons have caused too much sadness at the dinner table.
Poor children have been assaulted by deadbeat fathers, boyfriends, live in couch surfers, and women have been viscously attacked with spoons.
New laws require a more gentler peaceful “fingers only” way.

And only using the right hand. In case you didn’t know, the mus-lims use their left hand to clean their butt after taking a dump.

One reason they chop off a thief’s left hand in the mus-lim countries. If he/she is devout, then a family member has to feed them or they will starve themselves to death(no big loss, just saying).

I can’t beleiev the garbage people believe these days. I don’t use Netflix and I don’t believe if my cable company got money from them they would give it to me. Isn’t that socialism? By the way who is subsidizing Netflix now? The opposite of net neutrality gives ISP the right to read our mail! Wake up people! This isn’t about one giant vs another giant! The consumer won here not Obama! Jeeze quit reading propaganda and enjoy what little freedom and privacy you got left! You nuts WANT your ISP to spy on you?

This is stupid. I was hoping this article was going to provide me, an American citizen, tangible, significant information on why net neutrality is bad. A lot of people seem opposed. All this did was confirm my suspicions that the opposition is just companies that don’t want to jump another hurdle to get my dollar. I think the worst reason was the one about Netflix. God forbid they reduce their prices to $1 a month. The remaining reasons were had to do with either the “rule-making process” (what?! A president that uses back channels as a means to get what they want?? Simply unheard of) or had to do with claims backed by air. Look. Provide me with an ACTUAL reason not to support this and back it up sufficiently.

And all this spy talk? Please. Net neutrality only makes it easier, does not stop what is already happening….

Here are a couple of things:

This ruling is one step for FCC; a giant leap for government control of the entire internet.

It will probably mean a new cabinet position, hence a new arm or branch of the government under executive control and Lord knows how many new “government” jobs from the cabinet level and staff, down to the lowest paid “spy” looking for our “nefarious and derogatory” emails.

I encourage everyone to read the fiction novel 299 Days. To me it is almost prophetic in what is to come.

NN doesn’t subsidize Netflix or Facebook–that’s a gross misunderstanding of net neutrality.

Net neutrality doesn’t hurt investment–the ISPs have said so to their investors.

Net neutrality protects speech–it means ISPs can’t discriminate based on source, content, or destination.

It’s pathetic that conservatives are publishing articles like this that have no basis in fact. This article is filled with lies, ignorance, and misinformation.

I’ve been following net neutrality for years, and I know the previous rules, the rules that were proposed, what Title II means, I’ve read the briefs files in Verzion v. FCC, and I’ve read Chairman Wheeler’s summary of the new regulations.

The government CANNOT impose any law that limits free speech–it would be tossed by the courts in a heartbeat.

Verizon had to have a reason to sue to remove the previous rules. That reason: it wants to contract with companies to control the content we can access. Ironically, sites like this would be unable to afford prioritization and thus gradually lose traffic, meaning they wouldn’t have an incentive to create content anymore.

For a start, go want Sir Tim Berners-Lee’s comment to the FCC on the proposed rules and how essential they are to democracy and free speech (it’s on YouTube). Berners-Lee is the guy who invented the WWW protocol that we’re using to view this site.

Nope. I wouldn’t hold Michael Voris up as an expert on any world problem. He’s just another Catholic mouthpiece who snarkfests on others religions and Catholics who don’t tow his version of the Catholic line. Even the Church had distanced themselves from him. He had to stop calling his show “Real Catholic TV”. And as far as Ann Barnhardt is concerned, I saw one of her videos. She doesn’t strike me as anyone who’s entirely educated on certain subject matter. Yes they both recognize islamist terrorism for what it is, but that’s about it. Everyone’s entitled to his or her own opinion, or more specifically Voris thinks everyone’s entitled to Voris’ opinion. His comment about Cardinal Burke, who got demoted to a ceremonial post, says it all. After I saw Burke’s interview I said “GOOD RIDDANCE”. He represents a lot of what’s wrong with the Church. The man was completely unqualified to talk about divorce…. Using an excuse of men looking for trophy wives as reason to be against divorce. Goes to show he knows nothing about the real world. And no one is trying to destroy the Eucharist. A lot of people just aren’t Catholic. They don’t have to be. They don’t owe it to Voris or anyone else. He’s an extremist.

I really never paid too much attention to politics are even watched the national news much . I had a computer since 2000 had Direct tv since 2004.In 2008 I started watching CNN etc. I think ,then signed on to face book .I stopped reading ” I was an avid reader, didn’t read much anymore and started watching more television” I was leading a very peaceful life ,before. Lately I find myself writing to post like these .I thought I needed to be more informed, but think I will shut down all this crazy noise .It’s good to be able to speak up for what you believe in etc. but lately I find myself getting very depressed ,and I thought too much information coming from different peoples views,is depressing enough .In a word I think being informed is good but if nothing changes and in some of the public opinion some are so off the wall.,I am seriously considering shutting all this down again until we elect another president in 2016 .Perhaps the post will change .Do you guys believe so?. You know? sometimes ignorance is bliss . Nah can’t wait for the other scapegoat to be elected ,so we can again put the sin of the whole USA plus the world on his or her back .God bless that person is my prayer.

More propaganda from the Republican Party and Corporate America. Net neutrality prevents Corporate America from controlling the internet. So many of you out there need to start reading real news instead of all the Fox type of news reporting out there that is so slanted and inaccurate. This law prevents any internet provider from controlling the speed that you can access anything on the internet. They want to charge companies like Netflix extra fees to access the internet. That would cause Netflix to pass those extra charges along to you, the consumer.

What morons the bulk of you are.

First of all Netflix and Facebook do need the bandwidth.. we use their services.
When was the last time a company made too much money and gave the money back to it’s customers ? These companies want all the money for themselves..
The only time a company offers lower bill is when there is competition and someone else offers better pricing. Oil companies made billions of dollars per month while we paid 4 dollars / gallon for gas..did we get anything back ? No ..
