This woman has given birth to a baby girl. She will nurse it for two years in a jail before being lashed repeatedly and then hanged.

Meriam Ibrahim Ishag, a 27-year-old biochemist, is in a squalid jail in Khartoum, Sudan, with her 20-month-old son Martin and her new born daughter. She is bound in leg shackles.

Meriam has been sentenced to death after being found guilty of converting from Islam to Christianity and marrying a Christian.

Gabriel Wani, the brother of Meriam’s husband Daniel Wani, told the New Hampshire Union Leaderthat the birth of the girl on Monday is not a joyous occasion.

Meriam has been allowed by the court to nurse the child in jail for two years, after which she is given 100 lashings and then hanged.

Meriam was eight months pregnant when she was sentenced to death and 100 lashes after a Sudanese court ruled she was found to have broken Sharia law by converting to Christianity and marrying Wani, a Christian with US citizenship. Meriam refuses to renounce her Christianity.

Her lawyer Mohaned Mustafa Elnour told the Daily Mail newspaper in the UK that he and her husband plan to visit her later today.

“I think they are going to call the baby Maya,” he said.

Daniel Wani, who is in a wheelchair, was allowed to visit his wife and son before the birth.

Meriam reportedly told him before the birth that she would rather die than give up her Christianity.

“If they want to execute me then they should go ahead and do it because I’m not going to change my faith,” she told him.

Daniel Wani has asked the US Embassy and US State Department for help and has requested asylum for Ishag.

“I hope. I hope. I hope,” said Gabriel Wani.
