Yep that was good. Please remember my American friends to the south, the next time that someone says you should have “freedom of speech” laws like Canada does. Please remember this point: We have no freedom of speech here. We have “speech which is limited by government.”
It’s a bloody awful system, for those that are wondering why or how I’ll go into a short explanation. S.1 of the Charter of Rights and Freedoms here in Canada makes it explicit that the government(in turn the courts via case law) can create any law that they can justify within a “free and democratic society.” In turn, S.2 stipulates the various free speech sections allowed. Press, spoken, media and other forms of communication, etc.
Anyway, good luck Pam. And to my American friends, I hope you found the above useful, or perhaps insightful–especially when arguing with the fools of the day.
Now the courts themselves have been pretty good at ensuring that people are free to speak. However, going back to s.1 you’ll see that legislation has been passed in the past, creating bodies such as “Human rights councils” which can effectively curtail free speech because it’s deemed hateful by non-elected busy bodies. See the cases of Mark Styen and Ezra Levant, among others.
In the extreme, S.1 also allows the bypassing of various rights. Another example is the RIDE(Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere) program, and it’s various spin-offs around the country. The Supreme Court of Canada(SCC) ruled that the “needs of society” outweigh the rights of the individual and allow for warrantless stops on the highway to check to see if a driver is impaired.

Thought police can try to regulate where they have been allowed to be empowered, but they cannot take away our will, our resolve, our spirit to stand for what is right. You are right, Pam, clearly the “values” that Ricky Verappan asserts the fYork Regional Police “stand for” actually do not reflect Canadian values. Importantly, police have no business talking about values. They are supposed to uphold the law. Ricky Verappan is a disgrace & should be fired.
Elila said it well. To the letter of the law, we do not have free speech here in Canada. American friends, we never had “life, liberty & the pursuit of happiness” up here. Our big three are ” peace, order & strong government”. Think about it – this drives a completely different cultural paradigm up here.
