AIPAC Applause-O-Meter

23

Much is being made of the applause that Obama received at AIPAC. I think this needs to be explained, or at least put into some context.

AIPAC is generally an orgy of applause and cheering for anyone and everyone who addresses the appreciative audience. It is the one place where Jews can congregate and hear wonderful, exultant praise of Israel (outside of the constant campaign of anti-Israel propaganda). And the AIPAC rank and file love the respite from the lies and the smears. They will cheer anything. Seriously. Mention that grilled chicken will be served in the cafe downstairs and you'll get a huge round of applause. 25,000 carrots had to be brought to garnish the salads to feed 10,000 attendees. That, too, gets a hand. This is a happy group.

The response to Obama's appearance was tempered. Obama was not cheered. Yes, they applauded and they stood when he backpedaled on his Auschwitz borders comment (he said it, but "I didn't mean that"). But I will tell you that it was nothing like the response that Bush got or Bolton and Cheney received in previous years. The people never sat down during those rousing speeches. They raised the roof. Yesterday afternoon Eric Cantor spoke in the afternoon and the hall shook. Literally, the applause was thunderous, clearly reflecting what AIPAC’s members are really thinking. Here are videos of Majority Leader Eric Cantor’s incredible  speech to AIPAC: Part 1 and Part 2.

Story continues below advertisement

The hall did not shake for Obama. There was no huge outpouring of support. When he walked back some of his scary rhetoric, they appreciated it. Look, the guy next to me shushed me when he didn't like my remarks, so I shushed him every time he applauded. It was like that. It takes some people a very long time to figure out that they have been kicked in the teeth, and that they are getting kicked in the teeth. It seems impossible, but Jews simply do not comprehend what is being done to them, and what is being done to Israel. It is as though they are liberals/socialists first, Democrats second ….  and Jews dead last. German Jews thought themselves Germans before Jews …..

In a world that did not perceive Jews as Jews, first, last and always, this might not be such a major intellectual failing, but in this world, it is suicidal. They simply do not comprehend what they see, when they look down and see someone sawing off their leg with a dull saw.

UPDATE: Case in point: the functionary Howard Kohr is getting a standing ovation as we speak. Need I say more? When the janitor comes in to clear the tables, he'll get a standing ovation, too.

Speak for yourself, Pam. I would call AIPAC a pretty hard core bunch of proud Jews. And a conservative bunch to boot (compared to most urban Democrats). AIPAC has a history of raising hell if so much as an inch is lost in their cpampaign for a dominant, Palistian-free Israel. They are a lobby, after all. Lobbies are aggressive by nature.

Thank you for your follow-up. As a proud American and Jew first, last and always, I am sickened, saddened, and maddened that my people are so lost. Yes, I do believe if you throw them a bone, they will be reassured and satisfied. The AIPAC attendees should have walked out when BHO took the podium. Or at least stood and turned their backs to him. I do appreciate your referrence to chicken and carrots and the Jews being an appreciative crowd, but to be so thrilled to be thrown the pupik is beyond the pale. Oy Vey!

Lady,
I’m a German Israeli Jew, both my parents, my father’s parents and a few of my aunts and uncles either went underground or left for Palestine or Moscow 1934 – 1939. Some have perished with a weapon in the hand.
Me, I used to be in my younger days an anti-terror officer for Israel.
I never went to an AIPAC event, and I consider it not a Jewish organization, but a foreign interest lobbyist, namely Israel’s 5th column in USA.
But I listend to Obama’s speeches last Thursday and yesterday, and I applauded him loudly – in my mind 🙂
With one restriction: He didn’t go so far to become consistent and credible in his critics of the present Israeli leading gang under the premiership of the Nazionists Bibi and Avigdor.
I left, as many of my former colleagues and friends, Israel because it is not anymore a land for Jews, but becomes a land for haredi and secular ethno-racist colonists and terrorists.
Israel doesn’t need Netanyahus and AIPAC, it needs Obamas and J-Streets.
Kind regards
Robert

Umm, Robert! Seriously dude? You need help! Your German heritage is showing! You may say you are a Jew but you really aren’t because you don’t love Israel! Or possibly you are just an idiot! Yea, that’s probably it!
It’s ok, Barry O’Obama is now in the Island of green being Irish… I mean you can’t even make this stuff up fast enough! Then on to see the the queen…I’ll bet she can’t wait! Hope Muchelle dresses up and makes us all proud in front of the Royals…shudder…!!!

I am a Jew and was shocked during the elections at how so many Jews could have voted for Obama. At our Temple more than half voted for Obama. I kept asking myself why? Could they not see his true colors? Again, I am amazed at the applause he got when he was speaking. Could they not see he was trying to lie his way out of a bad situation? I pray that American Jews will wake up and not vote for him in 2012.

I agree in essence, that people are polite in applauding the President’s lame attempt at clarification (polite, because they know he meant what he said when he first said it). However, Howard Kohr is no mere functionary or janitor – he gets applause because he is 100% in support of Israel as an important ally and as Israel being in the right.

It is time for the American liberal Jewish people to strand the Democrat party in droves.
You played poker with this MUSLIM occupying our White House.
Time to repent.
Obama will NOT change.
He is un-repentant.
He went to a church that hates Israels gutts for almost 20 years. Thats the facts.
We warned, you didnt take heed to us.
It is time to listen to people that know what is up with this MUSLIM, Obama, and his admin of America-hating, Christian-hating, Israel-hating, Jew-hating bandits.
We would NOT have swayed you in the wrong direction.
Your life is OUR life.

You are a VERY SICK MAN.
IF you really believe:”Israel doesn’t need Netanyahus and AIPAC, it needs Obamas and J-Streets.”,you need to check yourself into the nearest ASYLUM for the Mentally Ill and DERANGED.
THE HELL you were an Israeli “Anti-Terror Officer”.
They would NEVER let someone like you near Israeli Security except as one deserving of their attention.
You likely didn’t serve in Zahal even as a Clerk/Typist..

I don’t begrudge the polite applause. Ignorance acomplishes nothin. However, every Patriotic American and especially any nonJewicidal Jew better start givin up more of their sacred Honor and Treasure to defeat President Obama, the DEMOS, and RINOS. Otherwise see ya in da showers. At a minimum we’re lookin at WWIII!

Very interesting article. I wonder, though, why does it take some a long time and others get it quite quickly? (Is there a psychologist in the house?) I’d be interested to hear any of the conversations Ms. Geller (or anyone else here that attended AIPAC) overheard or participated in. Anyway, I do like having Obama’s entrance equated w/salad garnish! That’s a keeper!

Just listened to Cantor’s speech. I didn’t think it was that great. He used the term “islamic extremists” rather than addressing the underlying ideology of islam. He used the term “arab spring” and talked about uncertainty in the middle east instead of nailing what is likely quite certain in terms of the outcome. And he said the emerging governments in the middle east need to stop vilifying Israel. He stopped far short of talking about how the United States and numerous other countries outside of the middle east need to stop vilifying Israel. Yes, he said some good and important things, but it could have been far stronger. Given the increasingly hostile and dangerous rhetoric that is coming out of the White House, he should have had the courage and the backbone to step up to the plate and nail this administration for what it is. We don’t have the luxury of time to dance around this enormous reality – that the United States is now leading the charge against Israel, plain and simple.

“(Is there a psychologist in the house?)”
If there is the likelihood is that they are a bleeding heart liberal. Trust me, I have some experience with this. My brother is a clinical psychologist. So is his wife. So are most of their friends. The bro thinks Muslims are just like everybody else and generally want the same things as those from Western culture. It’s those radical Christians he thinks present the real danger. His wife thinks multiculturalism is the best thing since sliced bread. His best friend, another psychologist, is so stoned all the time he doesn’t know what’s going on.
I think my brother spent something like 13 years attending various universities before he finally finished his PhD. And all of it a liberal arts education. So do you still want the opinion of a psychologist? Really?

The AIPAC crowd was smart enough to realize how awful it would look if they were rude to President Obama. Most Americans would have seen them as anti-American. If Italian-Americans booed Obama and cheered Berlusconi it’d be nearly as bad only because we don’t give billions a year to Italy. Jewish Americans have to realize that it doesn’t help Israel if they show no loyalty to America and insult our President no matter who he is.

You make a good point. And, at the same time, I think it’s tricky to have no idea of where one might draw a line in the sand regarding “…insult our President no matter who he is.” I think it matters greatly who he is. And who he is appears to be quite dangerous to Israel, and therefore to Jews everywhere. I, for one, would simply have preferred if AIPAC would have dis-invited him.

As a proud German with a family composed of former Nazis, I can assure you all that if the Jews banded together in a world wide manner as they are attempting to do today, there would never have been a holocaust, nor the slaughter of six million Jews during WW2. It is organizations like CUFI and AIPAC that will make sure that “Never Again”, means “Never Again”
The Israelis are not perfect, neither is Netanyahu. They all make mistakes from time to time, but they always back their people, and support their cause for freedom. Obama on the other hand and his Democrats have traded on Jewish sensibilities and and employed the same tactics very much like the Nazis did before the war. They appealed to German Jews as Germans first, rather than as Jews. American Jews feel they are so integrated within American society that they have forgotten that they are Jewish first. This unfortunate mistake will cost the Jews dearly should they assume that they can forgo their ancient religion and adopt a newer way of life, that of assimilation. It is hard to believe but there were Jews who indeed fought for the Third Reich as soldiers, airmen, and on the high seas. These Jews were partly Jewish and partly Aryan. They basically forgot who they really were.

Your first sentence kinda smells like blaming the victim to me.
The victims of genocide were often disarmed before being led off to slaughter
(e.g. Armenian Genocide). They were often rounded up by force (by people w/firearms).
The Jews of the Warsaw Ghetto bravely fought back, but against a well-armed, well-trained,
well equipped military force of SS soldiers how would you expect them to win? They had
no machine guns of any type, no grenades, no artillery, no tanks, no armored vehicles of
any kind.
AFAIC, it IS miraculous that the Jewish people won the day in 1948, period.

I’ll stand by the statemenet of the Son of Nazis above. Who controlled Krump Steel and I.G. Farben among others? Who controlled the New York Times and HAD the INFO on the Holacaust in 1942 but DID NOT PRINT? Who supported Stalin as he murdered religious Jews? Who are now standing with SOROS and da BANKSTERS as they set the stage for the destruction of the US and ISRAEL?
Tell it like ya see it. ALL people need to stand against EVIL who ever it be! Also as you said the second admendment protects us ALL, especially minorities against those who wish to destroy them! To disarm, turns ya into total SHEEPLE!
PS: Didn’t Stalin slip the arms into the Warsaw Ghetto so the Jews could fight and keep the Germans busy. Then instead of keeping the presure on the NAZIs they backed off and let the NAZIs kill the vast majority of da JEWS in the Ghetto and then he went forward with da REd Army. So ya can say Stalin assisted Hitler in killin those Jews!
